This post is for those who don’t like to buy everything on the internet. This summer I visited the north coast of California a couple of times. I made it a point to visit local hardware stores in small towns, to see if they carried quality traditional pocketknives any more.

In my home town, the local store still has the display case that once held Case knives, but now only has a collection of Chinese or Pakistani copies. I’m sure some of these will work fine, but I wanted to find something better. And I wanted to try it before I bought it.

Of course, the internet is the source for most of the collectors here, and the source for many of my own purchases. But I still like to patronize locally owned businesses that stock products and let you see them before you buy. I will even pay a slightly higher price for this privilege.

So this summer, inspired by this forum, I made a list of knives to look for. I wasn’t sure I wanted them all, but I wanted to see them, hold them, and then decide. These were:

Case peanut
Case mini trapper
Case mini sodbuster
Opinel 6 or 7

I thought I would share my search with you, in case you are also looking for a place where you can handle a knife before you buy. I am going to mention town names, but not store names, because I understand the policy of this forum is not to promote dealers. These towns are small enough that you will be able to find the store if you get to the town and look around.

My first stop was the coastal town of Bolinas, in Marin County. There I found a counter display box for Opinels, in size 6, 7, 8 and 9. Unfortunately, there was only one 6, which my partner took, no 7’s two 8’s, and 4 9’s. They must have been selling pretty well here! I bought an 8 as a consolation prize, in case I couldn’t find any others later.

In nearby Stinson Beach there was rumored to be a store that also had Opinels, but it was only open Thursday through Sunday, and I was there on a Wednesday. I did look through the window, and there was a tray of Opinels, but I could not determine what size they were.

Later, I hit the town of Point Reyes Station. Nice large, full display of mostly Case knives. I purchased a mini Sodbuster in stainless steel, with black Delrin handles. Would have liked CV and yellow, but you need to make some compromises when you purchase locally.

Moving north, I tried the town of Fort Bragg. Not many hardware stores between Point Reyes Station and Fort Bragg. I found various modern folders, and Chinese copies of traditional designs, but no pay dirt.

Then the town of Fortuna. Nice display of Bear and Sons knives, some small, like the peanut, but with blades at each end. I was tempted, but held to my list. Might go back someday for a Bear and Sons, though.

Last, Eureka. Largest display of all, with a clerk who knew and liked Case knives. Purchased a mini trapper, CV steel, yellow Delrin handles. Clerk himself had a Case jack with bone handles. But no peanuts. They also had a large collection of Spyderco and Kershaw.

So that’s if for my summer search. I had to order the peanut online after I got home!

So how do you shop for knives.

Here in rural eastern NC there are plenty of places to buy Buck and Case traditional's; I don't know of any place stocking other USA made brands such as Queen, GEC, Canal Street, or Utica. Gunshops, hardware stores, mass merchandisers, auto parts stores, lumberyards, etc., stock new pocketknives and the pawn shops have plenty of old ones (junk and NOS). As most of these locations (except a couple) have small displays, a dozen to two dozen models of one brand or the other, I can usually find what I want but I might have to make several stops to find it. Luckily I'm a building materials sales rep, thus I'm going into many of these places on a daily basis, covering roughly half the state. OH

I don't buy a lot of new knives. However, I have a lot of fun scouring the flea markets and antique stores for bargains when I get the chance.

Sounds like you had fun searching for the knives on your list!

About 8 months ago I found a gun shop about 45 minutes from my house that sells all sorts of knives. They have a Case case with easily 20 to 30 models in it, and another case of Puma knives. I believe that's the extent of their traditionals, but they also have a few cases for some of the bigger name modern folders. Its unfortunate though that these companies have to sell for higher prices just to stay afloat. I believe I paid $10-15 extra for my Case large stockman. It was worth it though. I'm always keeping my eyes open when I go on a trip and make sure to do a search of the area on the internet before I leave. I go through the same thing when I want to buy music, yeah I said it, BUY music. Specialized stores and store fronts in general are rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
God I sound old...

Case knives don't really interest me, but I do love old hardware stores. Last summer I was very near the Shaker Village in KY, saw a sign for pocket knives, etc at a small shop behind someone's house. Holy cow, he had hundreds of old knives. Tons of other junk, but the knives were pretty amazing. He wasn't giving them away and I'm not up on prices and aren't knowledgeable about the old ones, but it's really something to find a place like that. I love talking to folks and sometimes you just meet the most interesting people... a year or so ago, I met a guy that had an ancient hardware store, he fought in the battle of the Bulge- with pics to prove it... came home to run the family business... Also, here in East texas, there are still some really old stores. A few years back I went up the second floor in an old hardware, found tons of vintage union-made USA Carhartt... you better believe I bought a few jackets and coats!

My favorite place to look is at estate sales, but antique stores and flea markets aren't too bad either. The internet sure does make shopping easy though doesn't it.

My location doesn't allow me to do anything other than shop online, unfortunately.

This has been an informative thread for me. I've been kind of discouraged in my hunt for used knives that need a little TLC from me to turn them into users. This past summer, I went to probably 3 dozen yard sales without seeing a single pocket knife, desirable or not. I've never found anything worthwhile in several trips to the only flea market I know about in my city. And, so far, my visits to several local pawnshops have been "strikeouts". As far as new knives go, I've only found one hardware store in my town that carries knives, and their selection is fairly minimal. I've also been to hardware stores and "farm stores" (like Tractor Supply Company) in smaller towns around the area or while on vacation, and some of them had knives, but those are usually Frosts, Chinese Schrades and Bucks, etc.

I CAN usually find some interesting used knives (especially SAKs) at the local gun & knife show that occurs every 3 months or so; then it's just a question of my negotiating skills to try to make a deal that fits my budget.

But this thread suggests that maybe I just have to work on my patience and perseverance!
