Where/how do you fellas buy your knives?

ebay. Almost every time I buy from ebay. I know I want to support the locals, but if it's a deal I cannot pass, I go on ebay.

Gun/knife shows are the best way to purchase a knife to my way of thinking. I've found that the vendors can be brought down to a good price most of the time. But this is predicated upon the buyer already knowing the specs and background of the knife in question and what prices are available through other means such as the internet. Having good negotiating skills is also an essential part of the equation. Another thing I like about gun/knife shows (or stores for that matter) is being able to examine a knife in person for fit/finish and ergonomics prior to making the purchase. Just my two cents.

I do all of my knife buying from Ruff's Saddle Shop (ph. 1-352-669-3143) located in Umatilla, Florida. I have never left Ruff's feeling like I'd overpaid on a particular knife. He keeps his prices fairly competitive with the 'net stores and he gets nearly all of the new stuff in pretty quick.

For example, I picked up my Chinook II for $107.95 and the Cuda Maxx for $135.00.

Nothing beats being able to pick up and hold a perspective knife BEFORE laying down my money. It's best when I can pick out my knife and walk out the door with it in my hot little hands instead of anxiously waiting for that baby crap colored truck to stop at my addy. :D

You guys who go to the local B&M to do your tire kicking then go home and order from the 'net better start figuring on laying down some of your money at that local B&M or you'll someday go there to tire kick and find locked doors and an OUT OF BUSINESS sign on the door. :(
Then where will you go to try before you buy? Talk about pissing in your own water well.... JEESH!

I'm with Planterz on this one. Bladerunner Knives in Tucson is top notch. I have purchased probably 20-25% of my knives from Richard. I have bought at shows and from a few from the Forum brotherhood. I really need to get a knife in hand to clinch a deal.

I go to gun shows with a magnifying glass and a small sheet with prices (from knifecenter.com)...but, my negotiating skills suck.

Also a neat feature about the gun shows you can attach a small sign to your clothing, like for example, "Wanted: La Griffe" without being looked at as weird... ;)

And a good two cents at that, I like your advice, I need to go to more Gun/knife show.

i'm one of the few who do this, but like i've stated, my B&M is horrible, with sneaky dishonest owners and employees. i'll keep using them to handle knives, and when they go out of business i'll just buy directly online. it would serve them right. i can't speak for everyone else, though.

abe m.

Online prodominantely...currently waiting on one thats back ordered :( wont be here for a few weeks!

PS. I tyre kick at over pricing knife stores ;)

I am from across the pond. If the price is over the roof, I would gladly grab the thing and run, in case the seller change his mind. Over here, the price is way over the sky....Deep into outer space would be more appopriate! On top of that, selections are kinda limited due to the high price.

So, This is where BFC and KFC come into the picture. I pick my knives base on old hypes from these forums, the more hypes the better, but new hypes are worthless, because they might just be a new fasion statement for all you know! If you are buying knives on-line, it's actually a good idea to equate old hypes with quality! But remember...Only in old hypes! ;)

My local guys are kind of similar...very arrogant types. But, I am still reluctant with online purchases, so I guess gun shows are my best option. :)

If you can find something used, but still in good shape at a gun show, you can save a lot of money as well.

My best deal was a Gerber Guardian for 10 bucks at a pawn shop in Indiana, about 7-8 years ago....it was not sharpened, and I could not see any signs of wear.

Trust me, my man, you are only one of many who do or have done this in the past. You are one of a very few who are courageous enough to admit it.
I can see your reasoning because we have a place here that fits your description to a tee. I go in now and again to see if they've changed their ways but thus far it's to no avail. :( Too bad.
Thank God we have a couple of cutlery stores in the region that are pretty stand up places to do business with.

All the best,
Mike U.

I purchase some of my production knives online and some from brick & mortar stores. As long as B&M stores have reasonable prices I will support them.

Go to a sporting goods store and get a feel for the knife you want. Then order it online from a good source. I've made 2 orders for knives online. One, from tomars kabars went beautifully, got my package super fast and at an amazing price. The other from New Graham is still going, we'll have to see what happens. I got sent the wrong knife and had to send it back, then he's all out of the knife I ordered, then he found someone with it, he ordered it, and is currently (supposedly) sending it to me. I asked about New Graham here at Bladeforums, and everyone seems to say that they're great and they'll make good on my order. I think they will, I sure hope so.

Good Luck

I bought knives from Pawn Shops, Military Antiques, Army/Navy Stores

SFC

I buy my knives almost exclusively online, with a few exceptions. I have bought a few knives at the NY knife shows when they come to town and I was able to attend. I also bought a couple at a local mall knife store that has since closed up.

The only reason that I never regularly purchased anything at the store was selection and pricing. They carried mostly fantasy knives and swords, kitchen knives, junk knives, and a rather small selection of way overpriced Benchmade and Spyederco. I mean lower end knives such as a Delica or Endura for around $100. Now I would have no problem paying a premium for shopping in a B&M store, but I think it has to be a reasonable amount. Besides which they never really had any knives I wanted, and I would always stop in to check when I was in the mall. Always had the same collection of knives at the same prices.

As for shows well the only shows that I really know of in NY that are exclusive knife shows are ECCKS and NYCKS. Almost all custom knives, wish I had the dough to buy up everyone I liked, but I don't. So I buy a knife or two at the shows if I can. Besides I also do want production knives at times.

Other than those options from my understnading the only real other place in NYC that sells a decent assortment of knives is Paragon in the city. From what I have heard they are also quit highly priced. They are also a bit out of my way, so I have never really checked it out yet.

The good people at New Graham are a delight to do business with. They are very friendly, and they put a premium on customer satisfaction. Their selection is somewhat limited, but they manage to get some wonderful Buck custom knives. I buy from New Graham whenever I can. ;)
