Where/How do you store your knives?

I recently revamped my storage area. I looked at pelican cases, but they are way too expensive. I eventually came across a little something called Kaizen Foam. It's great!

So now, I have a little cupboard with a lock on it that contains slabs of Kaizen Foam with cutouts for all my knives. The cupboard also contains bigger stuff such as my sharpening stones and oil and whatnot.

I would post a picture, but I'm in the middle of moving to a new house, so it's all packed up right now.

I've found that you can buy really nice briefcases for almost nothing. Nobody uses them any more. I like the aluminum or leather ones, but the Samsonite are good too. They hold a lot of knives and stack well.

But my primary storage is this map chest: it's pretty near perfect. 4'x4'x3' deep it holds a lot of knives. Trouble is it takes me a couple days just to sort out a drawer or two.

Everything else goes into a footlocker. Opening those is like Christmas all over again.

That is pretty near perfect if you have a lot of knives and you do. Those map cabinets have become sort of a relic with everything being digital these days. Their big negative is size (and weight of course).

Received a Pelican 1450 as a gift to help "organize" my ever-growing collection.

I swear by SackUps knife rolls. I intensely dislike the nylon/fake fleece rolls. SackUps are silicon-impregnated cotton. Keeps moisture out whilst wicking away any moisture inside. I then store the rolls in a small plastic tub, and I throw in some of those little silicon desiccant bags you often get inside packages.

Most of the rolls are really made for smaller folders, but the 10 pocket has four larger slots. But like me, you can always unpick the stitching and get your Mum or wife to resew them with larger pockets. :D

FYI, they also make gun-socks.

I just checked these out. They look great and I may have to pick a roll or two up at some point. Thanks for sharing.

I have knives scattered all over the place but, I have two small Boker knife vaults. One in black Nylon, another in coyote tan.
The black one has slightly better knives but, either nylon vault could easily meet 90% of my knife requirements (at least).

I use a wooden 8-drawer tool chest from Harbor Freight. Works great, but I need another.

Yes, there are a few older threads about storage, but I am curious as to how you store your knives and additional detail like how many roughly you have, boxed/unboxed, open/closed, any special oils used, etc.

I currently have about 25 knives and about 10 of them are just beaters from Smith & Wesson, Gerber and Chinese Kershaws/Bucks. Most of my cheap knives are thrown in drawers in my office and bedroom. I also keep Leatherman multitools in my bass gig bag, laptop case and in my truck. My “good knives” are just on my home office desk closed for easy access and to play with during conference calls.

I am considering a Pelican case or possibly just store knives I don’t carry daily in their original boxes.

What about you?

Also, any long term storage tips to keep the knives in good condition?

Thanks!

Here are the steps I use for my extensive collection of valuable folders.

1. Knife is cleaned with Break Free CLP for long term protection.
2. Knife is then placed in a Ziplock small freezer bag with a little desiccant bag if one is available.
3. Ziplock freezer bag with enclosed knife is placed back in its original box if space is available in the box. If there is not enough space I store the box along with the ziplock stored knife in a second ziplock bag.
4. Original knife box with cleaned and wrapped knife inside it is then wrapped in lightweight bubble wrap and then carefully placed in large 25mm nylon-fiberglass waterproof, rustproof, and shockproof ammo box.
5. Ammo box is labeled and stored in a locked room in a dry cool basement. Heat and humidity are the enemy of anything steel, guns, knives, tools, etc.
6. The knife name & info is added to an Excel spreadsheet, listing the knife and the storage container number.

This process will store valuable knives for a very long time, decades. I have over a hundred knives stored this way.

Here is what a 25mm ammo box looks like. It beats a 50 cal metal can or a Pelican case by a bunch. These are tough as CRK knives, etc.
