Where is a good place to buy steel?

Hi guys. I'm just getting started and I have a few questions.

I'm interested in using plate quench steels like 154CM, ATS34, CPM154, CPMS30V and D2. Where are some good places to purchase these steels? I'm looking for 3/16" to 1/4" thick and at least 2" wide.

So far I've found some at Admiral Steel but I was wondering if there are other places I should look also?

I noticed some steel is precision ground. What's the difference between it and regular steel? Does that mean the scale has been removed and its been ground flat? Is it worth the extra price?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hello, take a look at the knife makers list at the top of the forum/sticky. There is alot of info and sites there. -thanks marekz

Member Aldo Bruno (New Jersey Steel Baron) has some great steels in his inventory..... sorry, no CH1NA, but he's working on it. I hit stuff with hammers so precision ground is not needed. If you are going stock removal.... that's the stuff, I think.

Aldo, ++++++++++++! Great guy, great steel, I buy most of my steel from him

Kelly Cupples I have gotten steel from him, no complaints

Niagara Specialty Metals They sell all of the CPM stuff and exotic alloys. Support them because they went into business to support the knifemaking community

I've never dealt with Admiral before, why do you say they suck?

when i bought from them i called and ordered 1095, 1080 and L6, they told me they had L6 and what they sent was 8670 (which they say is equivalent to L6, I didn't know any better at the time that I called them to complain about getting the wrong stuff) so I went ahead and made damascus with it then wondered why I had no real contrast. Their 1095 is horribly banded and deeply scaled and their customer service is apathetic at best if you are only buying a couple hundred dollars worth of steel.

How can you tell when a steel is as you say "banded"? What exactly does that mean?
