Where is Cold Steel?

Personally I like CS. I have a Tai Pan and I think it is a great fighting blade. Too bad it is too big, so it only sees carry in the winter when I can keep a coat over it. I like how they do have a variety of prices. Also, I do not see a horrible problem with things being made in Taiwan. It is simply a place, the company is what decides the quality. I have seen some Made in USA blades that have been horrible(Bear MGC Bali's)

The blade stock under the handle appears to have a slight bend, and I cannot tell if this is an intentional ergonomic feature, or a defect.
That's intentional, to help you tell which way the edge is facing without having to look.

Personally, I would rather have a CS Voyager lockback than just about any folder made by CRKT, Gerber or Kershaw. At least I know I can trust the lock. (clip point - I hate tantos)

The only drawback that gives Spyderco the edge is the opening hole vs. stud, and the tight pivot on CS folders. Oh, and CS serrations are not sharpener-friendly.

The only FB I have is the Ready-Edge, and it works just fine as a swimming blade.

There have been some very good reports here that the new lockback series with carbon V blades (Trail Guide?) gets wickedly sharp and cuts like crazy.

RH, don't try to sharpen the CS serrations -- steel them. I've been maintaining a Vaquero Grande edge this way for years, and it sees a lot of rough use. Just a few passes on the flat side and the serrations are back again.

Not a bad product! The tendency seems to be towards their
fixed blades, they're a bit pricey but you can get'em
at One Stop & eknifeworks.com for less ( don't buy'em from
their site  )

Glockman*niner-niner* I'm with ya' 100% ( along with the G-10
Spyderco Police! ;) )

CODE 3 : Stick with yer fire axe! :D

ABTW : I'm gettin' their Black Talon whether any of ya'
like it or not ! :D ( gotta have one "tactical black"
folder! ;) )

AET :D

I think the best stuff cold steel has out right now is their fixed blades. I have a cold steel japanese style tanto, that i carry in my own homeade kydex fold over sheath. Fit and finish a great, and it feels very solid and came from the factory wicked sharp. Other than that and handling a few other fixed blades, i have been impressed with their fixed blades. Folders may be another story.

Thanks for the varied responses. Much of what I read, I agree with. I think they have peaked as far as inventiveness and quality. Until several years ago, I bought nothing else; picking and choosing from their better products. It seems that they are buying others' products now and throwing them in their catalog. Metal choices also seem to be lessening.
As far as their folders go, I have always felt they had very solid locks, and if the blade was AUS8, I was pleased. I am sorry to see so many of their straight edges moving only to their serrated edge.
They do have great variety, I am a proud owner of the knives that I own; but for me now, I am enjoying others products. As you can tell by my forum name, I love the Peshkabz from CRKT, and late last week ordered a set of Crawford/Kasper Large folders.

Ah the choices - Thanks again!

You know, they never made a knife. All their products have always been contracted out.

Tell me about it: how solid is the frame, how tight is the lockup? I was looking at a sale forum custom P-K, the fixed blade, for a lot more money ... ahhh, well.

You have surely read all of the threads about the greatest and toughest knives; the latest being the striker.
But I think the frame is the most solid of all that I own (50+). the lock-up is very tight, even without the LAWK system 'turned on'. I work in a very large company in the Seattle area - in the past 3 weeks of ownership, two of my co-workers have ordered thiers to compliment their collections. I own two.
