Now Roger, there is French and then there is Cajun. I have often said that the world would be a much better place if all Frenchmen came from Louisiana instead of France.

Thanks, Chuck! Moon is a Harsh Mistress is where Mike is from. And no, There Ain't No Such Thing As a Free Lunch! "Moon" was the second scifi I gave my wife to read when we married. First was a Bob Silverberg book titled "A Time of Changes". About a drug, of course...:)

Embarassing I can't remember all the titles anymore. I started out on Heinlein and Asimov and have been an ardent scifi fan my whole reading life. Thousands of books. I don't read as many anymore cuz pocketbooks went away because of the expense when I retired. Had one job once operating a tungsten carburizing furnace on nightshift and read one book a night for a whole year. What a blast, but man are the few I saved filthy with carbon! hehe

The latest I read were Nebula winners (I think a few years back) by Kim Stanley Robinson; Red..., Blue..., and Green Mars. Good read.

Thanks for telling me.

I still like the Lazarus Long books best.

Thanks, Chuck! (BTW, Nanc is still talking about the sheath Larry Kemp showed her that you made for a Tai Goo "file" knife. Great work!)

you're welcome Mike.
Uncle Bob has always been my favorite too - bad Hollywood made a gawd awful mess out of Starship Troopers - the book is much more than the shootem up they turned into. As for LL - there ain't none finer.

Roux or as the Prudhomme family calls it - Cajun Napalm!

CL my mama was born and raised in Golden Meadow and you are right - there is French and then ther is Cajun

rides a motorcycle! no one will let him in their car after he eats that butt burner hotsause! OH! OH! OH! RING OF FIRE! RING OF FIRE!:D :D

Well Chuck beat me to giving the answers.

But yep, my dad spoiled me with old real scifi growing up. Cut my teeth reading his collection of old paperbacks. Asimov, Norton, Bradbury, Heinlein, et all, and still read them all the time. Heinlein quotes are about all I use for siglines anywhere, and for most any time a quote is needed. Always an appropriate one from him somewhere, and even there, the collected wisdom of LL pages in Time Enough for Love can cover most situations without any other help

etp - Hope I didn't spoil it for you???

Actually it had been bugging me exactly which book it was from (knew it was a Heinlein but...) and then suddenly it came to me - checked my copy (opened the book up only one page away :D) and Voila!

"Place your clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark." and "Always store beer in a dark place" LL
Words to live by.....

Here is another killer recipe...easy chicken and dumplings. This is like cheating.

1 whole chicken deboned and cut up the meat so it isn't too stringy.
1 medium to large onion, diced.
1 bunch of celery, cut up.
2 cans of cream of celery soup.
1 can of cream of mushroom soup.
1 can of cream of chicken soup.
garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste
1 can of large biscuits (like Grandes or the store brand.)

This makes a lot so have company over or I hope you like leftovers.

Add the onion, celery along with all the soup into the pot. Add water for consistency, about one can of water to one can of soup. Add seasoning to taste. There's that Tony Chachere's again...its the secret ingredient.

Roll out each biscuit until they are about the size of a tortilla. Cut into quarters. Once the broth is hot (not too hot you'll scald the bottom), add each quarter biscuit one at a time and not on top of each other so they don't stick together. Allow to simmer for a bit until the "dumplings" are done. Enjoy.

We eat this over rice too but then again, we eat everything over rice. I remember hearing my grandfather say, "I've got the rice on, wudda yaw want for supper?"

Craig

(Crawfish or shrimp fettucini is coming next...I hope you like spicy)

BTW There are no martians or dandelion wine in any of my recipes, but if you ever stop by the house you will always be welcomed to a free lunch.

Hey! C'mon, now, yer making me feel my age with all this "old" stuff! :D

Your dad did you a great favor by turning you on to those books. Great reading, and Heinlein was a great teacher in his own way. LL was probably one of the most "real" characters he ever created. And, a quote for nearly every occasion.

Thanks, guys! I've got a few "down" days here getting a bit healthier. A good Heinlein read may be just the perscription I need!

I gotta hurry and type, I am copying this from the missus recipe book!

Crawfish (or shrimp) fettucine (or what would be my last meal request)

1-1 1/2 cup margarine
3 medium onions
2 medium bell peppers
1/4 c. flour
4 TBLSP parsley
3 lbs crawfish (or shrimp tails, peeled of course)
1 pint half and half
1 lb. velveeta jalapeno cheese (or add jalapenos if the jal. cheese is not available)
2 cloves garlic
1 TBLSP salt
1 TBLSP black pepper
1 TBLSP red pepper
1 lb. fettucine noodles
parmesan cheese

Melt margarine in a large saucepan. Add onions and bell pepper. Cook covered until tender (15-20 min.) Add flour. Cover and cook 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Add parsley and crawfish (or shrimp) tails. Cover and cook for 10 minutes. Add cream (Half and Half), cheese, garlic, salt and pepper.

Cover and cook over low heat for ~30 minutes. Mix sauce mixture and cooked fettucine noodles. Pour into 2-3 quart greased casseroles. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese. Bake at 350 degrees 15-20 minutes. (This is spicy! You might want to experiment with the peppers to suit your taste).

The sauce is also good over baked or blackened fish.
