hello guys,
I want to make knives and I've searched on the internet for a long time what kind of steel I should use.
at the and I decided to use A-2 but I really don't know where to buy it. if any one knows a place please tell me (btw I live in holland so...)
thanks!

First a few questions. Is this your first knife? What tools do you have? How are you planing on heat treating the blade. Most steel suplyers have A2 but I'm wondering why you picked A2?

In Europe, A-2 is called either X100CrMoV5, or 1.2363
All the steel suppliers should carry it.

I also question your choice of A-2 for a first knife. The HT is specific, and not a home HT. Many other steels would be a better choice to start with. I suggest a simpler steel, like 1084 (G10840) or O-1 (1.2510)

yes this is my first knive. I have a file an angle grinder :)with a cut off wheel and a flat disk. for heat treating I've made an big hole in the ground and putted a pipe through than I can put a hair dryer at the beginning of the pipe. kinda hard to explane.
I first wanted to use 1095 but that would rust very quick. and That A-2 is very strong doesn't rust very fast

ow and... I'm not crazy I'm nuts

A-2 has only 5% chromium - it rusts. It also has a HT that you can't do with a pit forge.

Your best bet is 1084 from newjerseysteelbaron. Trust me and everyone else here we want to lead you down the right path. Nothing wrong with A2 in fact I quite like it but it's very touchy in heat treating. It must be held at 1750°-1800° for 30min and then air cooled. Not saying it won't get hard from heating in a pit forge but just because somthing gets hard does not mean it's good for a knife edge. Over heating can cause all kinds of problems which are very bad for knives. I would hands down no question asked take a 1084 knife over a A2 knife if both where heat treated in a pit forge.

JT - hei is in Europe (Holland).

ot combe - It would probably be best to ask one of the Holland/German makers like Hengelo_77. He would know the steel suppliers in your area.

To contact a member, use the BF search engine ( found in the stickys) and pull up his name. Click on his name header on a post of his and click "send PM" or "send email".

Here is the PM link for Hengelo_77 ( Bart Raven). BTW, he speaks Dutch, German, and English.

I can't send you a PB, so here goes public:
Have a look on this dutch knife forum. There's many links to local material dealers over there, as well as helpfull and friendly people.
Also places where you can outsorce HT if you wish.

See you there
