My son collects vintage straight razors, and since his birthday is coming up, we want to add to his collection. I see Bob's Razors and Vintage Blade have selections. Both seem good, and seem ready to guide a customer with a phone call.
Has anyone had any dealings with either, and is one or the other better?

I would suggest sending an email or communicating with a member here, he goes by "unit". He has a good amount of knowledge on straight razors. He's a good guy and I am sure he would be happy to point you to the best place for shopping and give you some info before you pull your wallet.

I have ordered from Vintage blade and Classic shaving a couple times in years past, never had a problem with either.

I usually find vintage razors at auctions, flea markets, and estate sales. I buy with intent to restore them myself...then I usually give them to friends or new guys learning the ropes. As far as collectible antiques, I am not a great person to give sources (since I don't buy restored razors usually).

I know a guy or two that restores razors for sale if you are looking for higher end stuff. My concern is that many collectors have preferences and I'd advise finding out what he likes before you spend. Wedges or hollows, big (8/8) or small (4/8)? Does he use them or just collect?

If you pm me with some particulars I can put out some feelers for you this weekend when I get home.

I'd love to help more, but I might not be the best guy to help...but I might be able to get the right guy for you.

Thanks to you all for your responses. I don't know his preference, and don't want to give up the surprise. He did once show me his daily shaver, pointing out that it dated to c.1850, and solicited my opinion when he had the scales replaced. I know he has a collection that he displays.

Since time is now of the essence, we will make a choice based on all of your feedback, probably from Vintage Blade (thank you Blownnova).

I will post which we chose.

Thanks again to all or you for your generous advice

Good luck, and I hope you find something special!

I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I am sure it will be great. Among my very favorite razors, is an Electric Cutlery Co. rattler (extremely hollow). While it is nothing like my typical preference (heavy large wedges), it is my most prized razor because my father arranged for me to have it (and it was my grandfathers daily shaver). My point is, a razor from a father is always special. I'm sure he will cherish it, whatever it is;)

Just to update everyone, we ended up purchasing a razor c1850-1870 , Manchester England, from Bob Keyes (Bob's Razors) He was extremely helpful and informative, in fact directing us to a less expensive razor based on what we told him about our son. We ordered the razor on Sunday, and it arrived on Tuesday - very efficient.
We highly recommend Bob as a source for restored razors.
The party is on Saturday, so we can see how our son likes the razor.
Again, thanks for all of your help and advice

Glad everything worked out, I looked over Bobs site, it is very nice. My favorite part, "I DON'T RESTORE JUNK !!!" I am always happy to see those who take pride in what they are doing these days.
