The slingshot thread got me thinking... I want a sling! :D But, I'm not very handy at making things (it's just not my thing) so I was wondering if you guys knew anywhere to buy one? I figure they cant be that expensive, but I'd like to get a quality one. Any ideas, guys (and gals)?

I'd suggest you try making a very simple one first before investing too much in a nice sling. Some knot work and cordage and you get a very functional sling.

Survival Sheath Systems also sells a very simple sling but I don't have any experience with it.

If you do want a nice sling though, there are people that can probably sell you one.

I would check out slinging.org. It's a great resource. My first sling was from the how-to section labeled "Making a Simple String Sling". The sling is super easy to make, dirt cheap, and works fairly well.

I'm a wee bit less than handy ( ) but I threw a basic one together with a small piece of leather and some paracord. I think there are even basic templates you could print off and then use to cut your leather.

I didn't use anything but my SAK and had a functional one in no time. Meaning if I can, anyone can.

I gotta read up about the technique to using one of these and maybe make one ........I have visions of busting myself in the hand or worse, the head!! :D

if you can tie your shoes and use safety scissors then you can make a sling, I whipped up my first one when I was probably about eight. Small piece of leather and two lengths of paracord will do, have fun and don't practice near anything with windows.

There's a guy making them over at edcforums, you have to be an active member to use the marketplace though. Tennis and golf ball sizes, most colors.

send me an email with your mailing address, i have the perfect thing for you.

Please checkout slinging.org It's a great site! I don't use it much, but there is a member there that has sent me numerous free slings, and I've found a lot of helpful info to make several of my own.

You've got my mailing address. :p In fact, my knife went out today (sorry it was a couple days later than I told you at first, but life got in the way and I didnt make it to the PO until today.). Anyways, feel free to play with it a couple days if you want, Simon, and even review it if you'd like. It's a pretty sweet knife, and a brand new design from Doug. Not even sure if he's sold another one, yet. Oh, to clarify, I'm Lee Clifton, not that other Lee! :D

lee, right, i can't keep my lee's straight...

i will toss it in when i send the knife back.

Robert at Survival Sheath makes a very durable one out of heavy duty nylon and paracord. I cut mine down some time ago to make it easier to use alone or with a staff and I wrap it around my SpecOps Survival Sheath with my RAT-7. I have not mastered it yet, that's for sure.

It's funny, when I was a kid I could knock fruit out of trees with one. Now my goal is just the broad side of a barn. :D

If I could make one when I was 9 then I think you can handle it. 2 shoelaces and a piece of denim. By the time I was 10 I was killing ground squirrels with it. My Dad gave me a dollar each.

I had one as a kid as well. I wonder how many people who did stuff like that as kids are now into knives ,outdoors etc?

I could see how you could hunt with them if you had a flock of ducks or geese as you can shoot in the general direction of things you aim at.

I made one very much like this one years ago. I never was very good with it but I could hit a tree ten or so feet away.
I found that the heavier the rock is the easier it is to throw and hit stuff
:D

Here are a couple of pictures I pulled out:

This was my first time using a sewing machine (a year or so ago).

REALLY simple to make, and this sling worked really really well.

I have to agree that a sling is something you have to make with what you have on hand. I made this one from paracord and a scrap of discarded firehose at the N Cali fires this summer.
