I used to forge things back in highschool(chisles and stuff)and we used a small gas forge, I was wondering where can I buy an inexpensive small forge? are they all gas powered? any sites that sell these?

Two suggestions:

ONe search the shop talk forum. Lots of cheap forge plans there, from Wayne Goddards's one brick forge(one soft fire brick, some wire, and a propane torch) to several variations on the weed burner forge, which consists of a 19.99 harbor freight weed burner and a pile of fire bricks, up to a full 6 bunrer sword size one, and everything in between.

Other option is jsut to buy Wayne Goddard's $50 knife shop. Several ideas in there, coal, charcoal or gas.

Hi Nismo! If you are a little handy click here for a link to a simple gas forge made from a freaon tank, along with much useful info. If you want to do it more like the kamis do,here is the link to Tim Lively's site. He sells charcoal forge kits, has tutorials on how to make them, and has a wonderful video on how to use simple means to forge a superior blade. Have fun!

adios,

Nismo, there is a lot of good info on Usenet at (I think) alt.crafts.metalworking and if you are looking for very good books at a decent price, check out www.lindsaybks.com and search "blacksmith", "forge", "knifemaking" etc.. Have them send you their catalogue, it is a must-read for every man!
As to finding a forge, you should at least try a "want to buy" ad in your newpaper; that's how I found mine. Keep your eyes open for anvils as you drive around, they are all over the place and not being used. Offer a dollar a pound and you'll get it. New, they go for $6-7 a pound. Watch out for the condition, don't buy one that's been too beat up along the edge and back. Invariably, the horns are blunted by hammering the tip, but you can fix that with a grinder and patience.

Good luck!
Stephen
