where to buy burlap micarta.

Another knife maker here on the forum- Ben Tendick (he's in the Eugene, OR, area) sells some stuff called Thunderstorm Kevlar., I think my friends at Alpha Knife Supply also are selling it. I have used some that I got from Ben, and it's really neat stuff. It looks a lot like a burlap micarta, but also has brass wires woven into the mix, which add some visual interest to it.

Here's a handle I did with the stuff-

Here's a link to Ben's stuff... :)

I believe there is a seller (vendor?) that goes by Shadetree Phoenolics that sells coffee bag (burlap) micarta. Fiddleback Forge uses some of their products.

That take on lighting strike cf is awesome Nick. Never seen that before.

Hi Nick.. Question about that "thunderstorm" material... do you find you get sharp wires coming loose in it and becoming small snags? I hear it's a minor issue with the lightening strike CF and was wondering if it's the same with that Micarta. It's great looking stuff and I'd like to give it a shot, i just want to hear someone's experience with it beforehand.

From the feedback I have gotten and from experience, the wires are pretty "stable" and less likely to pop up like in LSCF. It needs to be finished properly and all of the exposed wires broken off and sanded smooth. Pretty easy and straight forward, I just wouldn't leave it at a 120 grit finish like you can with G10 or micarta.

Yes, the Thunderstorm stuff polished to a high grit has stood up to several months of using for me, but the metal does snag in the early stages of sanding.

YES. That's the one thing I really didn't care for. But it's not a deal breaker.

In areas that the material is ground to where the wires are short--- I found myself in a bit of a "back and forth dance." I hand sand all of my handles, and while sanding an area with a really short wire- it would push it toward the other side. Then when you sand the other side, it would push it to the first side.

Like most things... it called for a super simple solution- grab those pesky ones with a pair of tweezers and just pull them out. :foot: :D LOL

There was some hub-bub over on the custom forum with folks comparing the Thunderstorm Kevlar to LS carbon fiber... but I'm not exactly sure of why.
