I just made a post about some wood handle ideas but I also have some friends who would like me to make them a knife for the material cost and am wondering where are good places to buy burls and hardwood from?

check the "knifemakers for sale" section... lots of options: Dream burls and Burl source pop off the top of my head but there are a few out there. Also the supply sites like Jants, texas knifemaker supply, usa knifemaker and the like all have some woods to check out.

Fill out your profile including your location so we can make better suggestions. Knifemaker's for sale area is a good place to look as has been mentioned. In addition to the wood sellers, various knife makers will sell off some of their stock from time to time. A lot of the wood from these sources are already dried and stabilized. If you want to cut it up yourself and wait months or years for it to dry enough to work with you can look locally. Check with lumber yards or tree services. A lot of burls and other nice woods removed from properties by the tree services go into a landfill or a chipper.

I have updated my profile. I also have a bandsaw so cutting and letting some burls dry would not be a problem for me to have some other options down the road.
How would I approach a lumber yard or tree service? Just ask if they have any burls laying around or if they allow anyone to come look for this kind of stuff?

Deal with lumber yards like any other store. Call or visit them and tell them a bit about what kinds of woods you're looking for and in what kinds of dimensions. You can also tell them what you're using it for if you think it will help them locate something for you. Some lumber yards deal with mostly construction type woods. Some also deal in exotic woods for furniture, cabinetry conference tables, etc. Tree services may or may not have anything interesting. You don't know until you ask. It depends on where you live and what kinds of species are indigenous to your location. I bet they'd be glad to get rid of it if you asked nicely.

Find your local lumberjacks. We have a lot of timber industries up here, and the mills won't take logs with burls on them so the harvesters cut them off and usually leave them lay on the ground. I have a few local timber buyers and loggers that save burls for me. One guy even delivers them for me.
