Where to buy used Spydercos

Hello, I'm a huge fan of Spyderco knives, and I especially like to buy used ones because they're usually in good working condition with only minor cosmetic wear. Definitely worth buying at half price.

I've had a little luck at pawn shops, but anything higher quality than Frost Cutlery is hard to come by.

I'm not a huge fan of eBay either; I'll stay on top of a knife for days and be outbid literally in the final seconds. Too much time invested, and a lot of the time a used knife will near "new" price by the end of the auction, if not exceed it.

I'm wondering if there are any websites that offer reduced prices on returns or used knives? I want to be able to try out different spydercos and different steels without hurting my wallet too much.

I also know the exchange on here is a good place, but knives tend to go pretty quickly.

I just got into knives a few months ago and have purchased a few dozen spyderco's via the exchange. I've sold or traded what didn't suit me at little to no loss. You can also post an add in the "want to buy" section of the trading post with a list of what your looking for.

Well, ebay is like any other auction either online or in real life - the item goes to the highest bidder. Whether you bid the first day or the final second doesn't matter.

The forum exchange is usually excellent, but yes popular items at fair prices do tend to sell fast. Keep an eye on what's being listed, and be ready to jump.
Have you tried the "Wanted to Buy" exchange forum?

Subscribe to the exchange forums, and use tapatalk or some other app to get notifications when new threads are posted. This is the best way to get a chance to grab the good deals as soon as they are posted.

Thanks, I'll give the exchange another try!

And I have posted in the wanted section with no results, but I'll just try to stay on top of what's for sale.

I guess my question was just wondering if there were any "alternative" ways of picking up used knives. I'm sure Spyderco and their dealers get returns back all the time, many likely used/slightly defective, and I'm just wondering if there's any way to get ahold of those.

For example, BLADEHQ buys used knives... you'd think they'd sell them somewhere too?

Wherever you find them, Spydies tend to hold their value fairly well - I wouldn't count on finding "half-prices" unless the knife is damaged or defective in some way. And I believe that authorized dealers are not allowed to sell "used" knives (although I've seen some sell factory seconds, on occasion). Best of luck...

Do your homework with Google. Know the knives that you are seeing for sale on the Exchange, and pre-establish your price preference. Know what length of grip you need for your hand-size. Know whether you want G10, carbon fiber, FRN or titanium grips, or even aluminum which is somewhat new.
Have some predetermined choice of blade-steels that you want, knowing that S30v is very common and S35VN is not far behind. For blades of newer "super-steel" status, you will likely have to pay more.
Check out the "ranking" of blade-steels here...

Of course, YouTube videos of folder tests are plentiful.

Be careful of the Bay, although it is possible to find something nice there, if you know what you're looking for. Take a look at the seller's Feedback rating, whether on the Bay or here in the Exchange. It's RELEVANT information.
There are also many manufacturers' Subforums here on BladeForum, which will be full of information which could help you.
I buy nearly all of my knives right here on the Exchange. And yes, once you are informed, you'll be able to be quicker on the trigger. I've missed out on tons of nice folders, as we all have. Part of the game.

best of luck,
Sonnydaze

Thanks for all the info guys! Really appreciate it!

And by the way link2derek, I did mean that I was looking for defective or broken knives, hence the returns:p
