for a buck more you can get a five foot bar from admiral steel and have enough to try several knives -chris
 
Been there but like the old woman that lives here, not satisfied .
Admiral steel, has hr steel don't they. Doesn't that mean that you have scale on it and you need to anneal?
Maybe i'm wrong? i WOULD TAKE 3/16 X 2 . I HAVE 1/4" X 1 1/2 WHICH MAKES A LOT OF GRINDING

Yes, the hr1080 will need annealed and cleaned up. Good luck finding what you need.
 
If it's not hra then you'll have to anneal it if you want it soft. You have to clean up pretty much any non-precision ground steel, some just less than others.
