I've got a Buck with the handle insets made from wood taken from the Old North Church(1 if by land, 2 if by sea, etc. etc.) during restoration work. Any idea where I can find an approximate value for this knife.
Thanks, Paul

Do you know if these handles were done at the Buck factory, or if someone did it aftermarket?

Hi Paul,

Can you give us a little more information. What is the model number? What is stamped on the blade? Then if you could post a few pics, I'm sure someone here could help you with some information. Oh, welcome to the Buck forum!!!

There are a few places to help find information on Buck knives and their values. #1) Come to a site like this and ask the forum members for information. #2) You can join a collector club, Like the "Buck Collectors Club", you get a quarterly news letter that is full of information, in addition you get access to the BCCI web site that is also full of information. #3) You could buy a book like "Blade's Guide to Knives & Their Values.

IIRC, there was a commemorative done with wood from "Old Ironsides", but this one sounds cool, too... :)

It was a Buck Factory Commemerative. It's still in the box in original wrapping. Will post pics if I can figure out how. I will get more info when I get home and post. Thanks for all the info so far.
Paul

Ok, I'll describe it best I can now and add pics later.
It comes in a brown box with "Buck Custom Knife" in gold letters on the outside. It's 4" closed with a 3" drop point blade. Bolsters and blade are polished to a high shine and silver. Embossed on the blade is a gold colored banner between two lanterns with the words "One if by Land, Two if by Sea" on the banner. At the base of the blade is the usual "BUCK". Under that is
500<, and under that USA. On the reverse of the blade in small type is the following " Wood used in the handle of this knife is part of a beam removed during restoration work at Old North Church of Paul Revere fame, Sincerely (the Rev) Robert W. Gofledge DD Vicar". At the base of the blade is 0248. It came with a wood display stand. The wood in the handle is sanded smoothed but has no added finish. I guess you would say it's in mint condition. The only thing I've done with it since new is remove the film of grease or whatever it is they ship them in to protect them.
Hope this is good enough without pics to give you an idea of how to find info about it. I appreciate your help so far and look forward to your comments.
jb4570, I'll be joining the Buck collectors club for sure. Thanks again, Paul

I was gonna offer to take pics if he's send it to me...but I can tell ya it would "get lost in the mail" on the return trip.

Wow Paul...you got a lot of "instant friends" here. TLC, John, McNugget, and Darryl. Oh me? I just like your knife. Reminds me of the other day at a local watering hole...I asked this guy with this knock out blonde, "hey, are you two married?"...he said "no"....I said, "good, cause I would have felt bad checking out your wife". I don't go to the bar to drink and I'm here for the knives BUCKo.

Sirusly, this is the greatest bunch of amigos around. I have only been here a short while and they have been nothing but patient and helpful. I have learned more about Buck in the last quarter than I knew in the 30 plus years I've been totin' them. You did right by coming aboard. OK....gotta stop...getting all poodle eyed.

HONK!!!

Hi Paul,

I found the information about your "Buck, Duke 500" as you have stated it's called "Old North Church". There were 343 of these knives made, issue price was $225.00, current value $175.00, issue date was 1988. Info found in the blades guide. I hope you post a pic of your knife, I'd like to see it. I watch ebay all the time for limited edition Buck knives and have not seen this one yet. Remember that with collectable's; prices fluctuate with market demand, the current value listed in the blade guide is an estimate and you may not get that high of an amount if you were to sell it today. But, you never know you may get more. Enjoy your knife and keep em sharp!!!!!

It just goes to show you....ya'll better be collecting Buck knives because it's fun, not because you aim to get rich. :p :D

 ...You're absolutely right about that Mike...I've NEVER bought a Buck figuring on making a $"Buck"$ on any one of them. Like you and most of the people here...I just like 'em a lot...They feel good in the hand and work like hell for ya when you need 'em to. I have Bucks from the mid-sixties to 2006 and I don't figure I'll make a penny on a single one of 'em. Of course I'd have to sell 'em to try...and that ain't a gonna happen...LOL...:)

But there are people who buy & sell Bucks, on eBay usually, who attempt to make The Big Bucks on what they perceive as collectable bucks...we've all seen their names, even been outbid by them...and those same knives seem to re-appear again for auction later...

Some of those individuals can even be found on this Forum...Not always in the Posts...but at least listed in the names of Currently Active Users...[lurking]... ;)

I agree with you our fowl friend and humble knife modifier  . You are a better man than I!!! I so wanted to post info on a gray bone 110 and name, names........but.....stopped myself. The knife in question was won on ebay...by out biding some of our forum members....then was back on eaby in less than two weeks for $40 over what was paid for it. Capitalism at its best I guess  . I don't like that kind of behavior because it will cost me more to build my collection when competing with those individuals......hay...can I get some cheese with this wine......:foot:

I thought it was time to post the link to this old thread again. Maybe some of the newbe's would like to add to the list.

I'm a collector....or addicted to buck knives I guess  . But, I buy these things to enjoy them and I have fun doing that :D . I have no intention of making a profit from them one day......hell..... my kids will have to pry them out of my cold dead fingers when I'm gone.....I wonder.....can I take them with me.....Hmm.....I'll have to think on that for a while. I also like to help find information for other folks and learn a lot from you guys here on the forum. Ok enough ranting form me today!

Ok guys, im about to make your day (I hope) lol! My father is the actual designer and and developer of "The Old North Church" knife. Myself,my father and Chuck Buck worked on this knife back in the 80's . A short story behind how my father got the idea of developing this knife is that my father was visiting the Old north church and he went to the basement on a private tour. While he was down there he noticed dozens of old support beams laying on the ground near the dozens of old tombs. He got an idea and developed the knife in question. The big problem that he ran into was that at the time the Statue of liberty was being refaced (i beleive in 1986)and buck developed a small folding knife at the same time with pieces of the metal in the handel. And that killed my fathers knife sales. There were plans to only make 1776 of the commerative knives but much less were made. I have a low # knife as well as my sister and another is in the Old north church museum that Buck and my dad donated.. I would like to hear how you obtained your knife to anyone that has one. My father was a good man and passed away 14 years ago and I would like to live on his legacy to see how he has impacted the world with his Pariotism. -

Hi PT1776,

Wow the dead rise again. This is an old thread "06" was 5 years ago....time sure fly's.

PT1776, how cool that you and your Dad were behind the Duke 500 "Old North Church" knife. It is a way cool knife, the timber/planks that were obtained for the knife were to costly and that is why Buck stopped production on this issue, the wood used from the church is Pine. I would like to hear your story on how this knife came to be.....more info please.

Buck has issued a few of these historical knives over the years. I'll post some old photos of the three historical Buck Dukes that I have. In the photo's are the "Old North Church" handles are Pine from the church, "Lady Liberty" handles are Oak from restoration work and the medallion is brass from the Lady, and the "USS Constitution" handles are teakwood from the deck of the ship and the medallion is also from the ship.

Very cool! i wasnt aware of the other 2 knives after my Dads "old north Church" knife.. The knife that hurt my fathers sale of his knife wasnt the Statue of liberty knife that you have pictured. It was a small pocket folding knife that had a very small peice of metal from the actual liberty. My dad worked closely with Chuck Buck to develop this knife. Unfortunatly my dad passed in 1998. If I was you I would hold on to that knife and pass it down to your children. Its a piece of American history that my Dad was very proud of and there were very little made. Thanks for the pics you you posted: ) I am interested in any questions that you may have or maybe anything that you know that you could share with me. : )

Oh and by the way, the wood wasnt costly like you posted. They were donated by the church to my dad and a small donation was givin to church in exchange. And I also have the original drawing that my father sketched of the lanterns with the one if by land wording. Patriot1776
