where to get a good mouse pad?

I dont know if you checked these, but try Office Depot, Staples, and Compusa. Maybe even BestBuy.:)
 
Yes leather will work for a backing.

You probably want one of the thin hard ones. The soft thick ones, if you're not real careful, allow the sandpaper to bulge up after the edge passes, potentially rounding the work you just did.

Light pressure.

Just my experience, dulling knives, trying to sharpen them.:o
