Anyone know where to get a hamon capable steel in 3/4 round or want to sell/trade me some? close sizes okay but not too big(none of that 2" stuff!) as I hurt my elbow and don't have any power tools...

What do you think about drilling and tapping the end for a threaded tang for some kitchen knives or just in general?

Luke, YW. Do you mean like an integral bolster, but drill it and tap it for the tang? I've done a few test pieces this way, and it's a LOT stronger than most folks would think. The hang-up, is some people will really frown on it, and secondly, you really need to silver solder it in place (hi temp solder) so you're not really saving much.

A good file jig will allow you to file the shoulders down anyway.

I could be totally misunderstanding your question though. LOL :)

Yeah instead of forging out a tang just face the end, drill and tap and use a piece of all thread for the tang, screwed into the integral, I was thinking of just punching the joint a couple times to deform but you think I should solder?

I can't say for sure Luke... my best advice there is to try it and see what you think. I could tell you it won't work, but it might be the best way to do it! :)

On the ones I did, I actually made a tang out of 1084 barstock, threaded the ends of it, and then got the 1084 to about 48-50 Rockwell.

I soldered them in with Brownell's solder... off the top of my head, I want to say it's around 500 F solder.

Hell... maybe some loctite and whacks with a punch would really do it. If you try it, please let us know how it goes! :)
