Where to get unfinished sheaths?

After making 12 new knives for friends, I'm at a loss to find some inexpensive sheaths for them....Most are 14-15 dollars each.
Is there a place to buy them 15 or 20 at a time for 5-10 dollars each? Thanks Phil

Good sheath leather costs from $5.00 to $7.65 a square foot and that includes the waste which can run as high as 20%. If you make a crappy knife, give your customer a crappy sheath. I was under the impression that the customer pays for the sheath anyway, so what is your problem? Be realistic!

P.S. Sorry to sound grumpy---just re-read your post and realize these were to be gifts to your friends who will not complain as long as the knife has a sheath---of any kind---------

Go to a leather craft store and buy some 8 to 9 oz. vegetable tanned leather and some sewing leather and make them yourself. It will add a nice touch. My first sheath was a little rugged. My second was almost passable. From the third one on I've made some very nice sheaths. It's not difficult and you'll just add to the personal touch of the gift of cutlery! Hand stitching them is not difficult at all.

I've found the Leather Factory to be an incredible resource and a wonderful and friendly place to do business with. They are also located all over the country and there is probably one nearby where you live.

Rocky,

Try Smokey Mtn Knifeworks. They used to have grab bags of misc sheaths...but it's been awhile since I've gotten their catalogs.

Heck, Helmar will be too humble, so I'll say this:

Martin (Sandy) Morrissey is a young version of 83 who has been doing leatherwork for longer than most any of us here have been alive. To say he's one of the premier sheathmakers in the country would not be overstating things. He does carving/tooling freehand better than most any of us could with templates and planning; it's sort of just part of who he is.

As he said, he misunderstood the meaning of the intent behind the first post, and apologized when he realized how he sounded. He didn't catch it at first that they were gifts and expenses needed to be controlled.

Hope that gives you a better background why he would think a good knife oughtta be sold with a good sheath. He's a very nice guy, truth be known.

Sandy are you going to be at the Trackrock hammer in? Rocky4u Sandy is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in person. He did a demo of sheath making at one of the Trackrock hammerins i went to. He is a very patient and fine teacher.

look at the leather sheath tutorial thread. I'e posted a simple recipe to tan your own... basicly shoot your dinner, make your leather :) it's that simple ;)
