Where To Go For Backpacking

Thanks for all the information.

Found some woods next to a golf course near my house that I think I can wander around in for the time being. Just can't spook any of the people living on the edges of em I suppose and I'll do fine.

As far as "high degree of freedom" goes, I just mean being able to do things like make open fires to cook food, being able to chop up some dead branches for various things, possibly hunting, fishing, smoking, openly carrying a kabar style blade, being away from civilization, able to set up a tent, dig up ground a reasonable amount if I desire, take photos of anything I encounter....I think that covers anything I might want to do. Then again I may end up doing little more than walking through some of these places mentioned, so don't think I'll be doing this on every path I travel. :)

Here are some pictures of places I've mentioned.

Don't exactly live in the wilderness here. This is where I'm trying to get away from.

Area I went to today and path I took. Was pretty fun, but still only a measly little plot of trees.

This is all I really have in my direct vicinity. I want something more adventuresome, rugged, dense, mountainous, secluded etc.

Yeah, no problem doing almost any of the things you mention. In July at Dolly Sods there are acres of blueberries.

I believe Cranberry Wilderness is a black bear sanctuary so you can't hunt bear there but you can deer hunt. I hunt at home though cause a lot of the places in the Wilderness you'd have to drag a deer several miles.

I cook using a wood cookstove and we always have a big fire and most places there's lots of dead or downed wood to burn no problem. We usually have big campfires. It's cool.

One tip if you go think NOT a lot of stuff. Heavy packs suck and rob me of the enjoyment.:thumbdn:

gauging by your pictures you should probably move:D . good on ya for having the want to and motivation to get out do stuff. keep that mindset and youll be ok im sure. be sure to start out slow as to not get in over your head and get hurt , lost , or both. lots of people live in the mountains or around them and never get out and enjoy it ,hard to believe but its true. really you should just move out here to tennessee :D and be done with it !

thanks :) I'm working on it. Things can be difficult though when you're working part time at Kmart with no car, no highschool diploma etc. At this point I'm honestly just trying to find a place suitable to build my own house. I'd rather do that anyways. I don't know what I'm gonna do, just kind of seeing where time and life take me I suppose. But I know what I want to do, and where I don't want to remain. :)

Ill add some of the tipi fully up later, but to put it up, you first lay out the tripod poles on the ground, tie the approate knot, then raise up the tripod poles. Once the tripod is up you add the skelton poles in a certian order. Then the last is the lifting pole where you tie the canvas to the pole and lift into place, or if you like my dad, think easier and screw a pully to the pole and lift up the canvas that way. Next you strech out the canvas around the ploes and lace it with lacing sticks in the front. Then you put in the liner, if you want, and the ozan, a cealing inside the tipi since water can still leak out. Our current one is 26 foot in diameter and about 30 feet tall. We transport the poles on top of a company truck with a trailer attached to stay legal. We bought it from http://www.coloradoyurt.com/yurts.htm and the make a good tipi. We even made a platform for it. Ill try and find some pictures of that too.
