where to practice my bushcraft skills?

I think its definitely a good idea to practice basic skills in some place like your backyard. Ive been practicing batoning wood, and fire starting. My dad taught me the best ways to start fires since he was an eagle scout for a while. I would have been an eagle scout but my family couldnt afford everything such as the trips.

TwitchyBlade - i live in an apartment on a second floor with no balcony :(
My brother has a balcony... I might just gather some wood and bring it to his home...

I practice in the back yard or some close by wildlife management areas and even some public lakes nearby.

Please do not attempt firemaking in Azusa Canyon! That place is a tinderbox and it is likely illegal. Collect some wood, and hit up Huntington Beach, or Bolsa Chica as both have nice fire pits, and plenty of area to process.

thanks for the advice...
I was reading that you can camp in Azusa Canyon... aren't you allowed to start fires as well?

Azusa canyon is a tinder box, which is why I recommend camping near the water, if things do even begin to get out of control you have a limitless supply of dihydrogenoxide (the most abundant and widely used fire extinguishing material known to man) The Rangers dont mind keeping a small camp fire although they wont tollerate any rediclous bon fires that are accompanied with drinking ect. Just use moderation and you will find no problems out there

omegaman, huntington beach sounds like a great idea, build a fire, stay up and watch the sun go down, to bad the surfs so mellow around there D= because that could easily become a perfect evening with a lady friend

Hey Car have you tried or heard about Irvine Lake? http://irvinelake.net/irv/vt.php?t=3 hope that helps :)

EDIT:
Oh and I always gather burnables when I am out in about, from out walking to bike riding :) If a tree drops it? I take it :) and the pits at the beach are an AWESOME idea! ESEE Bon Fire? lol. Fish off the rocks, or the sand, and clean and prep your catch there, make a fire, and enjoy?
