Where to retire?

Traveling through Southern Nebraska I passed through several small towns that looked very nice. Traditional American living, reasonable prices (I imaging), and quiet and clean.

You could definitely afford to live where I do, in Northeastern New Mexico. Inexpensive housing, perfect weather, and close to the mountains and millions of acres of public land.

Where in america would you retire to.

Near the kids/grandkids. Wouldn't care where that is.

Otherwise, on 200 acres in Central KY, with a big garden, an old tractor and a barn to keep my '69 Chevy truck dry.
$600K won't make you rich, but you would be way ahead of most folks.

right on

I know you said america, but there's whole retire communities of american expats in places like mexico, costa rica, etc.

Cost of living I believe is the principal reason.

If you are in Vermont, are you not already there.
How far would $600,000 go in Vermont? Could you realistically buy a nice home and have enough money left to live off the interest?

Example #1:
You move somewhere and buy an $80,000 house. That leaves $520,000, which earns $26,000/yr at 5% interest.

Example #2
You move somewhere where a small home costs $200,000. That leaves $400,000 which earns $20,000/yr to live of.

Could I live off of $26,000/yr? Taxes, transportation, groceries, insurance, entertainment, and utilities? I probably could if I cut back on spending.
Could I live off $20,000/yr? Probably not, at least not at anywhere near my current standard of living.

Im from jersey right now, im 36 and have saved like crazy. Ive done alot in 36 years and now all i want to do really is flyfish and ski. I dont care if i ever go into nyc, or to a play, or anything high end. I need to move to a place with low taxes ( typical northjersey home 12,000 yr property tax) I was planning on a log cabin somewhere on a lake, just dont know where, so if anyone has any ideas id love to hear them. By the time im 40 ill have a net worth 800,000 if that changes anything . Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Are you going to ever have kids? Because if so, that 800,000 is going to go away fast, especially if you want them to have a good education.

Kids are why my nose is still to the grindstone.

If I could move anywhere, I'd move into Oregon or Washington, but far enough outside of the cities to still be able to find inexpensive property. Alternatively, I'd take a good hard look at Montana. If I won the lottery and had millions to throw around, I'd look into someplace like Alpine County, CA.

cheap lake front might be a challenge.

but there is still cheap areas here in PA, if you don't mind living in the outback.

I live in Northern Ma. Plan is to retire in a year and a half, move to the absolutely beautiful State of Vermont, and do all of our shopping just across the Ct River in tax free NH.

Montana would be a great choice. Low cost of living, great fishing, hunting, and skiing. If I were you, I would save for a few more years though. $600,000 isn't really enough money to retire on. Now if you had a pension to go with that, then maybe. One significant expense to consider as you get older is health care.

The Philippines! You could live like a king there on the interest and dividends.

Colorado! Nothing beats the Rockies any time of year. If I didn't live here, I'd live there. Just think, you could fish and hunt for much of your food and save a bundle.

Nevada: Lake Tahoe. Low taxes, fishing, skiing, hunting, big casinos. However very different (west coast) culture than VT.

Buy a boat and live on it. I remember a guy living on his up here. In the winter, he had aerators mounted around the boat to ensure the water didn't freeze. I'm pretty sure his berthing fees were plenty less than property taxes. And he could follow the weather.

I met a guy a few weeks ago who has lived all over the world. Hong Kong, Paris, Seattle...etc, etc, etc. He is currently living in Pittsburgh. Of all the places he has lived, he said Pittsburgh is his favorite. Seriously.

The problem is that you have a long way to go before you get social security and medicare. I am in No. AZ. I sold my house in Goleta, CA for a rediculous amount of money, paid cash for my house here and don't owe anyone anything. With social security and a part time job, I live better then when I was working full time.

AZ is getting expensive. There are a lot of cheap areas to live if you can stand being surrounded by poverty and a crappy climate.

A few years back we were looking at buying property to retire on when we hit 50ish, how much we would need to cover costs until our pensions and 401k's kicked in, etc.

Now our little girl is almost 18 months, and we are looking into tuition, life insurance, etc. Thoughts of retirement are long gone.

So the first thing you should invest in if you want to retire at 40? A vasectomy!
