Where to retire?

We moved from NJ to UT a couple of years ago. I am not retired but the cost of housing and other items allows us to live very nicely. If I was to retire at age 66 (3 years) we could get along fine off interest and SS.

Unfortunately, there are no more homes or land available in Utah.;)

Just wondering if you had 600,000 net worth. Where in america would you retire to.

For several years Money magazine has had Gadsden Alabama as one of its top ten spots to retire, we have rivers, mountains and plenty of hunting and fishing spots within 20 minutes. Homes are super cheap, 1800 sq ft houses going for 125k, I own a 4000+ sq ft home and my YEARLY property taxes are less than 500 dollars, sales taxes are the kicker though, about 9% avg. Income tax not bad. Great place to be. Lots of retires moving in due to low cost of living.

Good Luck, buy your lunch when you move in.:D

Our plan is to have 2 year round permanent camp sites. One in the Catskills of NY and the other somewhere in Alabama or Tennessee. Each one outfitted with a high end but used camp trailer. Total cost of the two trailers should be around 50,000, site fees for both around 4,000 a year. As the seasons change we wonder North or South. We are both big time into the outdoors and love the solitude of a camp environment.

Come on down to Fort Walton Beach Florida. You can buy a real nice home here for 200-300 grand and if you're thinking about working during your retirement there's jobs galore. Cost of living is pretty good too. Sales tax is six percent and there's no tax on regular food.

A few years back we were looking at buying property to retire on when we hit 50ish, how much we would need to cover costs until our pensions and 401k's kicked in, etc.

Now our little girl is almost 18 months, and we are looking into tuition, life insurance, etc. Thoughts of retirement are long gone.

So the first thing you should invest in if you want to retire at 40? A vasectomy!

Yeah I am in the same boat, I have a 4yr DD and a 1yr DS. At 48 I can maybe retire at 68 or so. Steven

With that kind of money, retirement in the US is hard. I would love to move to Bali. There is beautiful scenery and you could well for about $2000 a month. Well means a maid, a gardener and a driver. OK maybe $2500 tops. A house would cost you about 40 to 50 thousand unless you want a mansion only downside is the fact that medical care is not up to US standards so for serious ailments I would go to Singapore.

Last month, I think, someone published the Top 10 Best Places in the U.S. to Retire - The town right next to me made the Top 10.
