I have a 4" blade going to be a camp/hunting/outdoors knife (no batoning wood) i made from 52100 - what would be a nice rockwell hardness and where would be the best place to send it for heat treatment?

I also have a 2" blade only for slicing and delicate work made from 52100 - how hard can I make this knife without becoming too brittle 62? Same question as above - where to send it?

Thanks guys, much appreciated

oh, these are both stock removal and ground from Aldos flat bar steel

TruGrit does a great job and most important they do not use a torch on your blade to straighten it after heat treatment like some do.

They have a system to straighten blades during temper.

Metallurgical Solutions in Providence might be a good option for 52100 as they used salt, but they, like Peters have a minimum charge.

I just wanted to mention for the consideration of the forum members that you can have twenty blades heat treated with no extra charge for cryogenic treatment for $85.00 plus shipping at Paul Bos heat treating in Post Falls, Idaho. Mr. Paul Farner does all the treating and tests each blade for Rockwell hardness specified. Now one blade has a minimum charge of $17.00 so obviously you want to send multiple blades. I just got back 16 blades for the $85.00 but I could have sent 20 blades for the same price. I have used this company for my last two batches and I am extremely happy with the service. Look at the Buck knives website for info on the heat treat service. I do not know how this compares to the Peters heat treat prices but I am happy with the fast turnaround and that each blade is tested for hardness and cryo treated. Larry

I'm extremely happy with the 52100 tomahawks I just had heat treated at Peter's to 58RC.

I agree. Peters heat treating. I had them heat treat my 52100 to 58HRC, i should have done 59 or 60 but it was tough as all hell at 58. Shoot for 59HRC-60HRC. Peters does a great job.

I got my last batch of 52100 puukkos done at TruGrit and they're the only HT service I'll use.
