I keep hearing people talking about sending their knives out for heat treatment. Where do they send them and how much does it cost for an expert to do the heat treatment?

Some makers on the forums would be willing to do it. I can't remember who I saw that said they would.

I use Peter's Heat Treating in Meadville PA (petersheattreat.com) for my carbon blades and oil damascus. They are very reasonable and do a very nice job. Talk to Brad Stallsmith, 814-333-1782, he runs their blade division and can answer any questions you might have.

What is "reasonable"? I really have no idea. Is it $5, or is it $100? The knife I will eventually make should only have a 3" blade or so, something like that.

I second Peters', never had a problem and they're quick!

Peters' runs a per piece price up to 6 pieces (of like steel) of I think $10 each, 6 or more and it's a flat rate of $60 up to 20 lbs of steel. Plus shipping of course.

If its Carbon Steel, you're welcome to come by and heat treat it

If its SS, Texas Knife Maker is probably your best bet for a single blade.
