Where would you go to survive?

This question may have been asked 5000 times, but if it is ok, I will ask again. I will also ask in the context of taking a family of dependent folks with you. I would have four gals to tend to. Would you go into the arborial north woods, or somewhere in the rural south... perhaps the mountains of North Georgia? I am currious what general types of locations people think they would have the best chance of surviving with a family in relative safety and privacy. For me, building a shelter in different areas would likely be doable, but an area that provides both shelter, water, and adaquate food for a family while being in the wilds may not be so easy.

Where do you feel gives you the best chance of surviving with a family and why?

Thanks

Far north Queensland.

Tropical climate.
Plenty of water.
Plenty of food.
Plenty of materials for building shelters.

Easy.

i would probably head to the nearest 4 star hotel. i think that would offer the best combo of shelter possibilities as well as food resources, for both short and longer term survival.

:D:D

i feel most comfortable in the local woods, basically NE united states. its what i'm most familiar with. i know the seasons well and i am pretty comfortable with the various food possibilities as well as shelter options for this general area.

the winters can be cold, but the summers aren't bad and i can just keep a big fire going if need be.

I'd go to Hollowdwellers house. Hang out by the fire there at night, hit the trout streams to the east during the day, come back with a stringer full of brookies to trade for some eggs, goats milk, shrooms and ramps.

HD, consider youself warned. Expect company. :D

i would probably stay right here in the Santa Cruz mountains..:D i love it... it's a great location... nice small little mountain town.. plenty of water, fish and game to hunt, trees for shelter and great weather too...:D we're about 10-12 miles from the ocean..

not too mention, this is right across the street.. takes me 5 minutes from my front door and i'm a big, heavily wooded state park..

Probably the Smokey mountains. Western NC or Eastern TN.

Doesn't get too hot, or too cold, plenty of game, not much in the way of Ghetto maggots to deal with and far enough inland you don't have to deal with hurricanes. Not much in the way of dangerous critters 'cept for a few snakes.

Still plenty of people there living the old way to share goods and knowledge with.

Siguy might not be so far off....

Why 'make a shelter' when there might be dozens of them already available? (I was thinking about the decimation left by the plagues of the Middle Ages, when there were plenty of houses left vacant all over Europe.) Although there wouldn't be public services such as electricity, water, or gas, there should be plenty of sturdy buildings even in more remote locations that could be used for shelter. I'd rather camp out at the Ritz than in a debris cave. :p

Plenty of pots and pans, lots of comfortable seating, tight to the weather even in winter, etc. Wouldn't some pre-existing housing be a good idea? Obviously this won't work as well in an 'Invasion of the Purple People Eaters' but I'd think that for most everything else where you might take to the woods there will be plenty of sturdy shelters available, both north and south.

I'm sold, I think I'll walk down to Mtnfolk mike's place...although my first thought was Safeway... Walmart might be a better choice.

The south central makes some good sense, long growing season, ample water, moderate climate. Maybe Walmart in southeast Georgia.

I would stay home. We have a generator, a cold room full of can goods, pasta and all sorts of camping hardware, cookers, pots, sleeping bags, wool blankets. Car booster in the shed, we have a chimney with 3 cords of logs in the yard.

Winters here are hell. a small example, last night I was cleaning my car. went to start it, but it only started on the 3rd try.. goes to say, I was prepared too.. bought a new battery, changed spark plugs & wire set, and sent her off for a tune-up before the arrival of the first snow.

Also after I got done all this, my car still wasn't heated up, actually when I sat in, it was freaking cold... and ice formed on the inside of the windows just from moisture on my breath and my fingertips were blistering red. very soft and could not feel much in them..!!!!

I went to the local convenient store to pick-up cigarettes, not even 5 mins away by foot. Took me not far from 30 mins to go and come back..

Really, I'm blessed we have everything at home, because It's a 45min drive into the next town.

Since you thought of this some - what would you have with you, at what time of the year would you be there, how would you survive and for how long?

+1 :D I would even go to Uncle's on the other side of the Poconos. His house is 4-5miles to main road and it is still in the middle of no where in the mountains.

I'd stay around my general area, somewhere here, because I am familiar with the area.
