WTF is this thing that just landed on my head:eek:

I'm guessing some type of gigantic hornet, but I didn't think those things flew at night.

Given that it only has two wings proper, it is a type of dipteran (a fly) and not a social insect like a wasp. I'm too lazy to key it out any further though and am relying on my 12 year ago entomology class.

I'd say you might as well eat it and see what it tastes like.

Looks like what we, around here, call a Cicada Killer. If I am correct, they sting. But, dont hold me to that, it' s just a guess.

My best guess is Bald faced hornet. If thats what it is, I had a huge nest on the side of my house. It was literally about 2.5 feet tall and about 1.5 feet wide. Just walking past them would be irriating enough for them to attack.

Bald faced hornet! They are the guys who have the hive with the external covering high up in trees, about the size of a basketball

KGD, the wings fold over each hother, but if you looked at it when it is dead you would see 4. Also, those mandibles, body structure, and antennae are also things that would let you know its not el fly.

Cool pics man!

Thanks Joe. Tony - eat that thing for sure!

Alright yay I win! (Wait, what do I win?)

But seriously, you should have seen my nest. It was crazy big. I never got stung by one, but my neighbor got hit in the thumb and it swelled up pretty good. My dad's homemade flamethrower took care of that.

Actually, I remember another time we had a nest at our camp about 45 minutes away where I actually got stung. We decided to throw some apples and shoot it with our paintball guns when two darted out to get me. One bit me and the other got stuck on my shoulder and I ran around the field like a little girl.

I'm no expert, Tony, but it looks like an advance scout to me.

The rest of them should show up tomorrow.

Cheers, ;)

Mike

The wasps and bees really screwed up when they decided to construct their homes out of materials such as paper and wax :P

Those are Highly Aggresive & "YES the WILL STING you " Many times over!!!!
Those guys are like "Mini F-15's :D

Thanks for the ID bmilla and Joe:thumbup::thumbup:

KGD, You obviously are like these Hornets, I will send a few over in a salad for you.;)

Mentor, If you're orrect and it is a scout, I'm gonna need a instructions on a home made flame thrower. bmilla's oldman is gonna have to draw something up for me.
