I bought my original at Plaza Cutlery in the mall. The great thing about doing this is that I got to open and close a few of them to feel which was the smoothest. Additionally, I got a chance to see whch had the best lock up and a centered blade upon closing.

But, because I did buy it at a knife shop in a mall, I paid a lot of money for it. Much more than I see over the net. Now that I trust the Strider brand I want another one. But not from the mall and their high prices.

Where would you'all reccommend to buy a new Strider SMF for the best (read cheapest) price?

SnGs and SmFs are pretty popular and go in the $400 range lightly used, i have not seen one any cheaper new than $475 for the SmF, SnG a little cheaper.

just got a SmF last week and really like it, a gen 2 recurve with brown G10 and tiger stripes, am very happy with it .........

I was wondering if it arrived.

Glad you like it!

I see the prices you posted, and I paid more at the mall. But no one has given me a place to buy. I know they're expensive but I don't want to pay $60 over what you guys paid.

Where do you suggest?

I buy knives from Plaza Cutlery and bought an SMF a year ago for 475.00

Are you telling me, their website prices are different from their in-store prices?

Plaza Cutlery charges $475 for an SMF.

Strider uses a form of legal price fixing. They will not give knives to dealers unless those dealers sell the knife at the MSRP. For an SMF, this is $475. If a dealer breaks the agreement, they do not get any more knives.

Hence, it is very rare (if even possible) to find a new SMF for less than $475. If you want to pay less, it has to be used.

If you paid more than $475 at Plaza Cutlery, it is because of tax.

Almost always, when you buy a knife at a knife store, you will pay MSRP. For example, Plaza Cutlery or The Edge chain will charge $180 (or whatever the MSRP is) for a Spyderco Military. But online sites will charge about $110.

But for Striders, Chris Reeves', and Willian Henrys, buying at a store is not a bad deal since they are the same price everyone (online or not). You pay tax, but save on shipping. These (and customs) are the only type of knives I will buying in a store since they are the same price as online. I would not buy, say, a Kershaw Spec Bump in a real store that charges MSRP. But you lost nothing by buying an SMF at Plaza Cutlery.

Wal*Mart is an exception, but they are not a "knife store".

Also, Plaza Cutlery is one of the best knife stores and has a great staff. I wouldn't mind buying from them at extra cost just to support them. I got my SMF there as well.

Neil (from TNK) and Dan (from Plaza) are actually (long distance) friends. Their prices for high-end production knives (Strider, CRK, WH) are exactly the same. Again, because they do not set the prices- Strider, CRK, and WH do.

For one that is not one hundred percent minty fresh never taken out of the box, came off the line and went right into a bag etc, I'm guessing a highly reputable store is the only option. Buying one that was taken out of the bag and admired by a collector, and was never used to cut anything including air, and was immediately wiped down etc etc etc, I'm guessing that you could probably do better in the Exchange, if you're looking for a user.

Honestly, as some have said, the cheapest place to buy a Strider is going to be the secondary market. I routinely see SNG/SMFs which are either new or carried, but never cut anything in the excange for between $20-$100 off MSRP in the different exchanges (depending on the need of the seller and their level of motivation). If you're looking for an online store, you're not going to find a discount.
