Wheres the love for the benchmade 581?

it's really easy to de-assist it. it only takes a t6 and a t10 torx driver.
i de-assist all my assisted folders (barrage(s), volli) and like them much better this way. it's just way more convenient to open and close the knife with your wrist, or gravity.

I de-assisted my 581 the other night, and it was really easy to do. However, give up any hope of putting it back in. It's so smooth now, and I feel that I should have done it sooner. The blade is much easier to deploy and close without the assist. Seriously though, there are over 30+ parts on this knife including the screws...wtf? Don't get me wrong, I love the knife, but the design should have been made much simpler.

it's also relatively easy to re-assist the knives. just remove the stop pin and assemble the blade at ~ 30°.

I really like the Barrage models, but like the poster above the 581 doesn't do much for me. I prefer the following with full G-10 scales and the 581 blade which ain't no slouch:

I have the 580&581. I really like the 581. I took the assist out of my 580 and like it better that way, but left the 581 assisted. It is super simple to de-assist the knife and no disadvantages that I know of.

Where did you get those scales, and how much? Just what my two 580s need. :)

Thanks

I have a hybrid like this one and I love it.

The knife pictured above (580-1102) came from a Canadian dealer named Warriors and Wonders in a very limited run of 50 pieces. The scales on these match the original concept and prototype versions, so were factory and not customs. The one above is a hybrid from the factory with a replacement blade from a 581 which dealt with a warped M390 blade. The one in the photo below is the original model:

That is so funny that you posted this. I have the exact same knife, and think the same thing. :-) I really only bought it for the steel. I bought one, sold it for about even, then bought another one. M-390 is just too amazing not to have a couple knives in. The knife feels good, ergos are great, there is nothing much to pick on, but it doesn't seem to be very popular. If they did the other Osborne, darn it, I can't remember the model #, but it's the big one in CPM M-4, in m-390, it would be amazing!!! I love that knife, and I'm silly over M-4, but I feel like M-390 is about like stainless M-4.

Anyway, I like the knife, and I'm a big fan of the steel.
I like it enough that I bought its little brother:

The 581 may not get as much love because it looks like more of a dress knife, but the size isn't (hence the 586 is perfect). It is a bit heavy compared to the 580, which has the Valox handles, but the different blade profile and steel make it worth it.

And yes, if they made the 810 Contego in M390, it would be awesome. However, I want them to make the 950 Rift in M390 first!

I have considered the 581 a couple of times but like others, I am not a fan of the bolsters or the assisted opening axis locks. Axis lock knives work beautifully because the are so easy to open and close. I almost bought one with the intention of removing the assist and having someone make a set of nice scales for it. But I went with the 810 instead because I didn't have any experience with m4.

Well, now that you have the 810, you can get the 581, de-assist it, and have Keyman or deathofallthings make some scales for you!:D

I had an 810 but I gifted it to a good friend because he loved it so much, he has since passed away and just for personal reasons I don't want to carry an 810 again even though I love the knife.
Have you considered carrying one in honor of him? You could even send it to Benchmade to have some kind of memorial laser engraved on the blade, so you will always have something tangible to remember him by. just a thought...

Where can I get custom handles for this knife?
See above. If/when I decide I'm tired of the bolsters, I'll have one of those gents make some scales for me.

Gorgeous. I had one but it was just too big and heavy for me to carry in shorts and such. I went with a 480-1 to get my m390 love.

I have the 585 model, I know it's not the same, but it's close. I scored on it due to the fact that a retail store had the knife priced wrong, but they honored it anyway. I love the knife, and would also like to get the 581 model. I think it's a good looking knife.

the barrage is a sweet knife, I'm not a fan of AO knives either but with the m390 and the thin blade profile the knife cuts like crazy, and far as the bolsters, yea I could go either way with them as well, but It's not a deal breaker by any means. I do love the g-10 and handle width though IMO it feels up the hand nicely, I would buy the knife again, especially at the price point at which i got it at, If anyone knows another m390 knife for $120.00 bucks BRAND NEW please let me know I'll be all over it like stink on ......well you know
