Seriously.... Where is the love? Here and on the home forum.
This knife has ALL of the makings of a real winner. Is it that it doesn't use S30V? Is it that it has an SS, not titanium framelock handle? I wrote a review, and personally, I think it's the greatest dang thing since the screwdriver.
If haven't bought it, or aren't going to buy it, and you could change one thing that would get you to buy it, what would it be?

I love the looks and design . I don't know anything about its steel though.

What is it like guys?

Well, from what I've read the technical specs of the blade steel are similar to 440C but that in real world tests it performs much much more like VG-10. I own a Benchmade Monochrome in N690 Steel and have been very impressed with the performance of it. The BM came with a wicked sharp edge that has been abused (being that the BM only cost me 30 dollars) and has held up as well as any of my Delicas. Plus it has been easy to bring back to that same sharp edge.

Oh, and P.S. I have to agree with you Walking Man, from everything I've seen the Volpe can't be beat and I'll buy one as soon as the money makes itself available (probably after this semester of school ends and I'm able to work more than 16 hours a week. Having to study for my college courses really eats into the amount of time I can spend earning money.

Sorry folks. Inferior steel coming from an unfamiliar maker. Please. Spyerco has way too many great designs coming from their "known" makers in Japan (made with "proven" bladesteel) for me to be tossing this much cash on a "ho-hum" knife such as the Volpe (or whatever the heck it's called). A person can sample this bladesteel for less than thirty bucks with Benchmade's toilet-crap-flea-market "red" series.

The Volpe is way down on the list. In baseball they call this sort of thing a STEEEEEEEEEErrrrrrrike!

i love the looks but for 20 bucks more you can get a mini skirmish-with a ti framelock and s30v

That plus I don't care for the dip in the spine.
I might try one after Blade, right now all the spare change I can get is being put back.

The thing is I dislike the mini skirmish even if it was made of solid gold.

Even if it was for 10 $. I hate both the big and the mini skirmish.

The vople is superior by design. ( To me).
The only thing I was waiting to hear about is the steel.

I heard it was close to ATS 34.The steel is fine with me.I just wish it did not have the dip in the spine.I will have to handle one before a make up my mind though.

I like that dip, I think it is supposed to be for your index finger if you are push cutting
.

Since you asked,

I'll give it one point for not having a Boye dent, ;) but...
  • it's a framelock - I'm left handed :grumpy:
  • it has wooden blobs stuck on the handles :barf:
  • it has a bug cutout in the handle :barf:
  • it has a whole lot of writing on the blade :barf:
  • it has a swedge grind :barf:
  • it has an "almost full flat" grind, so it almost gets a second positive point
  • it has a forward finger rest - hasn't every other model that had one of those been disco'd?
  • it lacks traction grooves on the thumb ramp and forward finger rest
  • it lacks a 50/50 choil

What is a swedge grind?

Can you explain that Decon?

Looks interesting to me, but I have not handled it so it's out till then. I do like the finger dip on top of the blade (love my early Rescue 93mm) but there are several other Spyderco's I am waiting on.

The reason I purchased a Volpe is because of the framelock and classy looks this knife has. I don't mind the bug cutout at all, and this blade feels good in the hand and the pocket. The only thing I don't really like is all the writing on the blade, but I can live with it. Overall I think it is worthy Spyderco offering:thumbup:

Sure, a swedge grind is the grind that creates a partial "false edge" on the spine of the blade. The Native and Police (with the exception of the full flat ground G-10 version) would be examples of knives with one, there are quite a few others as well. I prefer a full width spine both for purely aesthetic reasons and because it is one less thing that can be questioned by over-zealous building security officers.

"It says double edged blades are illegal, it does't say both of them have to be sharp" sounds a LOT funnier here and now than it did there and then. "Illegal weapon" in question was a white micarta Baby Jess Horn.

Thanks Deacon

I understand Paul's points, especially being a leftie and all :D , but you guys need to get your hands on one of these before you make the final call. IMHO, the blade engraving is nicely done on this one and it absolutely locks up tighter than a vault. Lots of thought went into this one. For example, the interior scale beneath the Spyder cutout is polished so that when you look down inside the scale at a slight angle, the Spyder is reflected. Kinda cool.

I certainly wouldn't worry about the bladesteel. It's premium stuff that's been around for awhile, but not widely used due to cost. Here's a post from awhile back:

N690 Cobalt Stainless is an Austrian Steel that has the added ingrediant of Cobalt. Cobalt enhances the quality and the performance of stainless steel (provided the steel has certain ingredients with specifiic percentages...and this steel does!) by allowing the steel to be very hard (58-60 Rockwell) but not brittle, very resistant to any type of corrosion, and the abilty to hold an edge even after hard use.
This steel is rarely used in a production knife due to its cost...it is very expensive. It is normally used by custom makers.

N690 is used in the meat cutting industry as they need a blade in their automatic cutters that does not corrode with blood and salts and does not need to be sharpened often, It is also used in the medical field for surgical implants and surgical blades.

From a practical point of view I feel that N690 Cobalt is unsurpassed as a blade for use in a "tactical" knife.
Hope this helps.

Mhhhhhm, the combination of Austrian Steel and Spyderco knife is an absolutely must have for me :D . I already ordered one, but I've to wait ...
and then I can tell you what I think about the Volve in praxis.
