Whether to EDC a multitool or not

For me, the pros far outweigh the cons, but I work in a maintenance field and do about 99% of my home and auto repairs myself.

In fact, I've gotten used to carrying a 6" adjustable wrench in my back pocket in addition to the multi-tool (leatherman wave), as I've found pliers in generally don't loosen nuts and bolts nearly as well as a wrench does.

I've hip holstered a Leatherman wave every day for the last 15 years. About 5 years ago I started EDCing a larger (usually 4") front pocket folder. All time favorite is the Kershaw Volt 3600, but I now rotate several different knives, including custom fixed blades.

Once you start carrying a multitool, you start looking for excuses to use it. Then reaching for it several times a day becomes automatic.

I highly recommend multitools to anyone and everyone who will listen.

With a big enough Hammer and my Surge there is no job to big or small:)

Seriously , for me at work the Surge is an essential tool .
I been trying to carry other multitools , Wave , Skeletool etc over the last few weeks and went back to the Surge this week . It was like welcoming an old friend back .
I've learnt my lesson and the Surge will be on my belt from now on , just like it has been for many years .
The weekends around home are different and that is where the Skeletool really comes into its own .
With its pocket clip it is very handy and adaptable .
I carry another knife usually a Traditional or lately a small Seb 21 .
But I really wonder why I bother sometimes because the Surge will do it all and is the first thing I subconsciously reach for .
I don't like admitting it , and I'll never say it to my wife , but a decent Multi is all that anyone ever needs . Notice I said needs not wants :)

It has taken me about 2-3 years to finally start EDCing a full sized multitool full time. I am a Funeral Director and Embalmer by trade but I am also a Volunteer fire Fighter and first responder for our rural county here in North East Georgia. The need of me needing a full size multi tool with me everyday is probably less than 30%. But when their was a need for the multi tool , it was needed badly. Mainly with the volunteer fire side of things. I have not saved any lives (yet) by carrying my multitool but I have on a small handful of occasions greatly sped up the process of putting out a fire by fixing some of our old fire fighting equipment on scene. So that to me is enough reason to EDC a larger Multitool like a Wave, Rebar, ParaTool or SOG PPP. Now for my full time job I could probably get by with a Vic Tinker small and never need anything else. Opening boxes, letters and the occasional screw that needs to be tightened is about the max I will see in a days work.

All in all I think carrying a multitool is a must. Whether its a Small Swiss Army knife or a Leatherman Super Tool 300 it will benefit the carrier of the tool sooner or later.

So Buy , Collect , and Carry on.

I keep going back to the Surge too. Just the right size for "real" work. I'm an service technican for an electronics company.
I carry a Skeletool CX left front pocket in my free time, when its less likely that I need a MT. I wouldn't go smaller than that in a MT, I'd rather use an SAK then.

I rarely use the blades on the Surge, though. The 420HC is crap and I can't be bothered to sharpen it all the time and I'm carrying another knife anyway.

To EDC a multi-tool would be a prudent choice, my friend. Most people don't, they usually carry around a folder. But the wonderful thing about a multi-tool is, they already have a knife with it. Who knows! your life might depend on it!...

Most of my work takes place in an office environment and I find that something small but multifunctional like a Vic Alox Cadet or LM Squirt PS4 is a perfect companion to my knife. I still, however, keep a larger multi-tool in my bag just in case I need it and there are many days it comes in handy. The rest of the time I frequently carry a Vic Spirit X, LM Charge tti, LM Juice or Sog Power Pliers on me along with a knife.

Used a squirt ps4 for a little while on my keychain. liked it so much that I disliked how small the tools where , extraordinary functional for my uses paired with my knife. I decided to upgrade to a bigger style tool. the bottle opener can be a little tricky with the ps4, as for edc'ing a multi tool go for it , I hear rumors of people carrying useless electronics that rack up fictional stats when time is sunk in to it .....fun as it my be it doesn't screw for you.

I have a Squirt PS4 on my keychain it works good but very limited. My everyday EDC is two, I have a Skeletool CX and a Freestyle Both are made by Leatherman. I only need the pliers and a decent knife which they both have. They both fit in my back pocket very well (I removed the pocket clip) I switch between the two.

Between my love of knives, tools, tinkering and things in my pocket, I got a leatherman Micra the first chance I got. I carried it with light use for a couple years and started to wonder why I carried it (I usually used the full sized leatherman tool in the lab for most use) until I was in an office bathroom and the door jammed. And someone broke the key in the lock trying to get me out. At 9 pm... My Micra had me through a vent in the door in no time. Since then I've upgraded to a CS in my pocket (for the scissors) and a PS on my keychain (TSA compliant and in a pinch can be even used to remove a tick from a squirming toddler). In the end, it all depends on whether having a set of pliers or scissors would make you happy.
