Which 3 HP motor for KMG?

I think the 2HP AC VFD is going to have a lot more ass that the 1-1/2 HP DC. I will have mine up and running in a couple days and will let ya'll know.

I burned up a 1-1/2HP DC variable when I started the big blades and bought another on ebay for $300. This one's doing OK but I need more power.

Mitch, give Rob a call on the phone, Monday. He has been much help to me.

Joe, 220 is always better, run a 220 line when you can, uses 1/2 the electric also.

Thanks, Don. First thing Monday AM, I am on the phone with Rob! That would be great if he could set me up with a whole 3 HP package!

I would skip all the hubbub and buy a 5HP motor, then be done with it:D. That would be the greatest KMG ever i bet:D.

I wanted a 5 HP variable but Rob said it wasn't economical.

I may wind up with a 5HP with a three speed step pulley set up. This is not a bad way to go :)

That might be EXACTLY what i am gonna do Don:D. Looking at the bay for some surprisingly cheap 5HP motors, lower RPM to step up and step down as needed. I have a machinist friend who could make me some pullies to fit the shaft on the larger motors so that wouldn't be a problem, could get quite a few different "gearings" for all kinds of ranges of speed and stuff, with gobs of power to boot.

Well, the KMG grinder is super nice but the 2 HP VFD is not enough power for me. Rob said it probably wouldn't be but I wanted to try it anyway.

It does not seem to have anymore power that my other two 1-1/2 HP DC motors. I will use it for awhile but will replace with a 5 HP at some point.

Good luck with your purchase Troop, but get a larger motor.

I just spoke to Rob on the phone. He is really a great guy to speak with and, of course, very knowledgeable with all things concerning grinders. He advised me of the difficulties of making a variable speed grinder above 2 HP.
So, I'm back to square one . I might just throw a 3 HP (or above) fixed on to a KMG. Ya know, I mean with this being the 21st century and all, why is it so darn difficult to get a 3 HP 2x72!

Just use a three step pulley set up for a three speed grinder. Be alot cheaper than variable anyway. Rob has the pulleys also.

Yeah....I'm going to have to do that. I might as well just go with the 5 HP and be done with it. I guess the thing to do is to get the pulleys last, or, just make sure that the pulleys that Rob has will fit the shaft size of the motor.

Here's some pics to complicate things a bit. This customer needed monsterous hogging capabilities ...and also delicate variable speed finishing. So he used 2 motors. One for high speed hoggin, and one for more precise work.

Look at these photos and note that the big motor was mounted on sliding table with a screw and crank allowing him to quickly move it into position when he needed the extra speed and power. Other wise, he would use the variable speed motor.

This is a 5hp, 3450 rpm motor..and a 1-1/2 hp DC VS motor.

There's more than one way to skin a cat!!

Don, I'm going with a fixed speed 5 HP dedicated Hoggin' Monster. This is after a 2nd consultation with "Dr. Rob!" :D . I'm going to have to get a second, "cheapy" grinder for finer work, it looks like.

Wow Rob that is an awesome idea! Multiple motors for different jobs, very interesting.......Thank you for posting that. Mitch, i'll see yah about the KMG today.

Bro', ...by the time you get here it's going to be friggin' dark! :D

Two motors, never thought of that. The KMG is definitely a versatile machine. I could easily add a 5 HP and still use the variable.

Thanks Rob!!!

Oh,... yeah. I missed the whole point of the two motor thing!:o ... I gotta check into that possibility.

Don, I'm going to do exactly that; get a variable 2 HP from Rob, then get a 5 HP motor just for hoggin'.
