Which $40 or under Fixed blade?

The USMC aka Mk-2 knife is designed for a wide range of utilitarian functions. It is not primarily designed as a weapon. The handle is big and round and the blade is a little light for optimal fighting. It is a significant advantage to have a blade with enough blade weight to break an opponents radius (the thinner forearm bone behind the thumb) by using a snap cut. For serious defense a bowie is a good choice for a lighter and more compact blade than a machete. The machete will work better if you can take the bulk.

I like the idea of the Spec Plus Frontiersman -- that's the Spec Plus version of Bagwell's fighting bowie, right? I've heard inconsistent things about the Spec Plus line as far as quality, but if it's just a matter of resharpening, no biggie. I thought that one of the usual suspects (Cliff, maybe?) had found that the handle comes off easily in real use, or something like that.

A machete is a fine choice, though the 18" will be much too long in certain confines -- like your home. Strictly for defensive use, possibly in a home or other tight confines, I might very well go with the Frontiersman -- which is faster, and effective for both slashes and thrusts -- over a 12" bowie (slashes only, for the Ontario versions).

John,
Money is of no object only if you have a lot of it. Many people out there can't afford a $200 combat knife. I limited it to $40, because it seems like a reasonable number. Also, you could get a cheap handgun (maybe even a used one) for around $100. There are a lot of good choices of knives available for around $40, which are not just emergency knives. Some of them have even been battle tested - e.g. MKI and MKII.

I think the sheath is important, because having an open bladed knife is not exactly safe. Personally, I keep my knives sharp enough to slice right through cardboard - so an improvised cardboard sheath wouldn't be of much use.

If I absolutely had no other choice - like I was running away from a stalking attacker and I needed a knife now - a kitchen knife would work. But often, they are not balanced well, have poor grips, and are generally not well suited for use in self defense.

Overall, I'm looking for a knife that you can keep next to your bed, in the car (where legal) or even can carry on your person when called for. Guns are great - but once you're out of ammo, they're not too useful. A $40 knife is meant to supplement a defensive handgun or shotgun - or replace it where not available.

Of course I'd prefer a wonderful custom knife meant just for me, but not all of us can afford that luxury. It's not as if a $40 knife won't do the job.

Ka Bar USMC Fighter is a great all around knife, in my limited time in The Corps I have used mine for everything from tent stake to eating utensil. I wouldn't suggest the leather wrapped handle or leather sheath. They don't hold up well in a field environment. Kydex(maybe a custom for concealed carry) would be my choice. Maybe I am slightly biased... but it would be my first and last choice for a good utility/self defender.
