I am interested in getting a ASM Metals Reference Book for heat treating blades. When I look for that book I find different ones by different authors. Which one do I need for heat treating blades. I would be especially interested in what Larrin would suggest.

The ASM Heat Treater's Guide - Practices and Priocedures for Iron and Steels - 2nd Edition.

It is available in a big hardcopy ( which I recommend) and as an online app. Don't know what the app costs, but the book is pricey, around $200+ ... and worth every cent.

Looks like there's a copy available on Scribd, if you have an account. Not as nice as a hardcopy of course, but it may be a little easier to search through, or to print of sections as you like.

The app is named "Heat Treat" on iPhone and is free. It's a nice ballpark reference but for very precise heat treating (e.g. maximal HRC numbers), I would google posts on here.

The app is fine but there is a lot more information in the actual book. If I remember right there aren't any figures or images in the app, which is where a lot of the best information comes from. The book isn't cheap, however: https://www.amazon.com/Heat-Treaters-Guide-Practices-Procedures/dp/0871705206/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525263632&sr=8-1&keywords=heat+treater's+guide

Another book to look at is Tool Steels 4th edition, though it looks like the price of that book has gone up recently: https://www.amazon.com/Tool-Steels-...525263743&sr=1-2&keywords=tool+steels+roberts

For any of these books, while there is some good general information in them, if you are looking for information for one specific steel they may or may not have what you are looking for.

The ASM Heat Treater's Guide - Practices and Priocedures for Iron and Steels - 2nd Edition Was publishedn 1995, and as far as I know it hasn't been updated since. So most of the new steels won't be listed. It however is a wonderful source of heat treating data and knowledge.

You are correct. New steels will have the majority of the available information in their datasheets.

I have printed out the data sheets on some steels and stuck them in the back of my ASM HTer's Guide.
