Which Becker PAIR for Hunting/Camping Duties? Help Deciding Please...

BRL-
You were pretty close to have not done it.

If you are just field-dressing (gutting) the animal in the field then any good sharp knife will work. I have used 2''-3'' folders quite a few times. If you are going to be processing the whole animal down into freezer packages, or quartering it up to be packed out..then a larger, heavier knife is needed. I personally use a saw to cut the large bones.

My father still uses what his father taught him to use for hunting: an old butcher knife and a common razor blade.

LOL, I'm surprised a butcher knife works for that, it aint like they were made to cut up meat or anything. ;)

razor blade is a new one for me, although I have thought about using a razor knife before, figured it would work.

I would go for the BK9 and a tweener. My first Becker was the 9 so i can attest that it is a very functional and comfortable chopper. unless you have a saw, you will need something heavy for the bones as stated earlier. I also agree that a neck knife may not safely give you enough handle. I have medium sized hands and the 14 with the micarta handles are a bit small for a job that takes time and precision.

Yeah it's an old Green River butcher knife. Who know how ancient that thing is. His father gave it to him when he turned 12 and it was an old used knife then. Sometime around 1965 he made a sheath for it out of an old boot and about ten years later added a small squarish pouch on it to hold a small pack of razor blades. Fishing, hunting, camping, cooking, it's the only knife set-up I've ever known him to use. He thinks I'm goofy for having all these more expensive knives.

My personal favorite combo is the 9 and 14. I like to have a chopper so the 9 comes along. The 14 is great knife for small tasks and cleaning game.

But you seem to prefer a smaller blade. So I would recommend the 17 and 14. Also, the zytel handles for the 14 are a great improvement.

Whenever you decide, we would love to see pictures of them in use while hog hunting.

Not an expert but I do a crapload of hunting (longbow almost exclusively) in mostly hardwood forests and for me the perfect combo is the BK9 for building blinds, clearing shooting lanes, general mayhem...

..and the BK11 for game processing, lesser mayhem and whatnot...

If you are adamant on a smaller big blade though, the BK2 performs nearly as well at big tasks (as the BK9) and carries much more easily.

When I go Hog hunting I'd like to have 2 knives, one for the basic field dressing chores and the other for other stuff that comes up that you never know about.

By that, I can only assume you are thinking about a BK-2... you just don't know it yet. The BK-2 lives for the "other stuff that comes up that you never know about." It doesn't matter if you are just doing camp chores, surviving in the wilderness, or if you just happen to come across a Buik that needs to be field dressed.

A BK-2 is (regretably) the only Becker I own, but if I wanted something else for skinning... I think I would go with the BK-16. Seems pretty perfect to me.
