Hi all,

So I have made my first blade using a filing rig and many hours of filing. I wish to make more blades now but to utilise a belt sander. I am overwhelmed at the amount of sanders available and wondered what you guys would recommend. I am in the UK and have a budget of approx £300

I have no expereince of grinders what so ever so I need one that will be forgiving

thanks

Jon

Well as a starting point look at 1" X 42" grinders and 2 " X 72" grinders to help you sort away costs and do ability of these machines.

A good way to start out is with a smaller belt sander. I've been using this Kalamazoo 1x42" for a year now and I'm very happy with it. Costs around $250 US. Best part is the belt speed is right for knifemaking and belt supply is pretty decent from knifemaking suppliers. When you have the money to upgrade to a 2x72, you can keep this one for smaller projects and/or as a dedicated sharpening rig.

do you plan on making for a business or just a hobby? this affects things a bit,can you make your own?

The link Roamad provided is to one of the few sanders out there that isn't a variable speed that runs at 1800 instead of the typical 3450 RPM's--making it a very good choice for those looking to economize. A 2x72 is where you want to end up, the belts for them represent the best value-and probably selection-of manufactured belts out there. There are many good choices nowadays, for a lower starting price I would look at the AMK this model includes a VFD which is excellent http://amktactical.com/epages/3c926...26a50-9aba-43a5-9571-098ee03f1288/Products/42
If wanting to step up a little I would look at the professional model from NorthRidge Tools https://www.facebook.com/North-Ridge-Tool-693093377465487/

good luck, and let us know which way you are leaning and we'll try and help you decide--I will say that I wish I'd had a 1800 RPM Kalamazoo to start with!

thanks for the information everyone. My knowledge has increased 100% from where it was. I'll now do a bit of research with this new knowledge and keep you all informed of what my plans now are
