Which belt sander?

um, looks like you need to buy a motor for the Lee Valley sander - they are just selling the device w/o the motor???

Hmm - decided to get the Craftsman 2x42 but you can't seem to buy belts on the website - where do you guys buy belts for these?

Home Depot has that for 100, so definitely take that over the mastercraft.
then lemi know how it works.

Edit: Damn it, its not in Canada either.

Who's up for a beltsander run to the states!

There is a Home Depot in Alberta, but they just have the Ryobi 1x30", probably no better than the Mastercraft. Check out House of Tools, they have the Delta 1x42" which I have. It works quite (surprisingly) well to grind with the coarse 40 grit belts. House of tools also has a different grinder in their metal working section under "bench grinders". It is a grinder with belt sander combo by General International. Don't know if this is any good or not, but it sure looks neat. The ad/write-up for it on their site say's it's "perfect" for grinding steel and it actually refers to "knifemaking". Honestly, after comparing motors, the 1x42 Delta still puts out more juice. More amps equal more power, or so I've been told. The Delta runs off 6 amps, the other ones run off 4 or less.

I mean the delta belt sander is only sold by USA Home depot. But thanks for the insight on the General grinder, the bench grinder would be more usefull then the disc.

Duno, still actually considering just getting my dad to pick one up next time he goes to the states on business.

Check out on the web a place called Active Machinery Sales Ltd. They are located in Surrey B.C. and they carry Kalamazoo belt grinders all the way from 1x42 to 2x72. They got some really nice looking machines, but they might be a bit more expensive. It say's they're "conveniently" located just outside of Vancouver.

Now if I got one of the once without a motor, what is required of the motor i get? Can i be creative? its just a shaft right?

...I'm thinking treadmill, should be able to gear it, has good torque, and speed adjustment.

Just hook it up to the neighbor's dog with a really long lead and some pulleys, throw a bone and there you go!
It's all good, but if it were me, I'd go for the 2dp (dog power) motor with 10 bones for the extra amps.

How much was it? they dont have prices listed.

I like the fact the Kalamazoo's obviously come with Baldor motors, which is good. You'll actually get a genuine 1/3hp out of it. I would probably try to get one with a faster running motor/belt speed to help grinding. Still, I think these are well built machines suited to more hard use than the Delta 1x42 I have now. Not sure on price, but I think you'd get you're money's worth out of one.
