I'm considering AFCK II plain edge BT2 coating with D2 steel, Griptillian plain edge 440C, 710 plain edge 154CM and 942 Osborne satin finish plain edge 154CM...

Any views?

How do these compare with Spyderco Wegner, Military or Starmate?

I know the Griptillian is the odd man out in terms of pricing, but it does have the AXIS lock....

Thanks....

The 940 series would be the easiest to carry based on
size alone, but the 710 would be my choice for a large
carry knife.

The Griptillian would be my choice, because it gives me *most* or the things that I love about my Wegner clipit but in a lighter package (3oz less helps with dress slacks) and an axis lock. The AFCK is a great knife, and probably the best fighter of the bunch, but I prefer the blunter, deeper blade and fuller handle of the Griptillian for most daily cutting chores. It just fits better, and the blade cuts like crazy, even though it will take a little more stroping/honing to keep it really scary sharp. I normally strop mine on the back of an old belt every day or so for a couple of passes, and then touch up the edge once a week on the Sharpmaker with the ultrafine stones.

If you like the Military you would probably like the AFCK. Both liner locks, both nice big knives, both VERY secure grips. I have owned and used both , and prefer the Military slightly to the AFCK; the flat ground blade of the Military seems to cut a little better for me. However, my AFCK as ATS34, not D2, and I suspect the D2 would hold an edge much better and that might make up a little for the better geometry on the Military.

Only had a 710 breifly, and a Starmate for slightly longer, but never really felt comfortable with either of them for heavy use. Hard to explain exactly, but i prefer a more definite guard / swell & finger grove to the sleeker handles on these two, and I felt like the moved in my hand a little too much, but that may just be me. I had my left index finger nearly cut off once (literally) and tend to be a little paranoid about these things.

No experience with the 942, but the ones I have played with seem well designed and made. Plan to trade for or buy a 940 one of these days.

I just recently purchased the black bm 942 osborne as my EDC. I love this knife. It rides very light in your pocket due to the aluminium slabs......plus i really like the blade geometry.

Very nice knife.......i would recommend it.

My only beef is that it's so light i have to keep checking periodically to see if it's still there. :D

I've carried the 940, 710, and 690. They're all great, but the 710 has become my EDC. Something about that 940 is really sweet, though.

I love my red 940.
Light and strudy and I like the blade shape.
It's my "working hours" edc nowdays.

But, during free time, I grasp my 814 with me time after time.

Both are great knives and at least I can't tell which is better...

The 710 has become a modern classic. And not without reason: it is an awesome knife. When I think of modern tactical folder for EDC, I think of the 710 over anything else. I prefer the M2 steel, which is coated. But it keeps a very keen edge.

It has a great steel, great lock, excellent ergonomics, slicing ability second to nothing in a production folder, and it a very well built, solid knife.

You've listed such a wide variety of dissimilar knives that it's hard to figure out what your EDC carry requirements might be. If you could indicate what your normal, expected uses will be, it might be easier to give more specific advice.

That said, of the knives your mentioned, probably the BM 940 would be the best for general EDC. It's flat, light, very easy to carry and has adequate blade length (3.4") for most needs.

Along the same lines, the BM 941/943 with the modified clip point also may be a knife worth consideration.

If you decide on the Griptilian, compare it with the Spyderco Vesuvius before buying.

Good luck,
Allen.

Nope, you are not alone :)
You have expressed very clearly justified opinion, would be nice if each opinion would be justified as strongly.

As to me – 551 Griptilian is my favorite everyday carry BM and one of the most favorite folders totally. BTW, one of the very best buys.

And 940 Osborne for suit carry all the way!

Allen,
SPYDERCO Vesuvius is very elegantly designed knife, I like it a lot and I would like it even more with colorfully anodized aluminum or natural color titanium handle. However it can’t match Griptilian in at least two futures – closed position retention and handling security. Preferences are pretty individual thing but for me these futures are quite important.

You may want to look at the TSEK also. It has a bit more of a utility blade than does the AFCK. It has a thumbstud instead of a hole. I recently traded into the Mini-TSEK and the blade reminds me of the Griptilian. Not the same, but similar. The full size TSEK may fill your needs.

Mini-AFCK in M2 for a very managable smaller package and the 710 in M2 if you like a larger blade, but if they ever come out with the Mini-Afck in an axis folder then all bets are off (D2 or M2)
