which benchmade for EDC?

wow thanks. looks like bm wins hands down here:) :( . I was hoping that someone would give the wegner more support! I read a lot of good reviews about it. is the 6oz listed weight one of the reasons it doesn't have many supporters for edc?

looks like for bm, it's an even distribution of views....

I work in an office, carry at least one knife with me at most times nowadays, whether its an endura in my backpack, CQC7B in my chinos (on dress down fridays) or small SAK in dress pants (sometimes endura too!). Endura a bit big for dress pants (weight is fine) - I had thought about the wegner, but strictly for non-dress pants carry. I think the lines are quite nice.

Any further ideas?

Ahhh maybe I didn't get the deeper meaning of your post! I thought that you were limiting your choices to the Benchmades. Sorry, this may take a few lines...... :D

You will notice in the first line of my discussion of the Griptillian that I said:

"The Griptillian would be my choice, because it gives me *most* or the things that I love about my Wegner clipit but in a lighter package (3oz less helps with dress slacks) and an axis lock."

I have carried a C48GPS as my main EDC for a little over four years and love it dearly. I would (and have) chosen the C48 Wegner over all the others for my big EDC folder. I like the axis lock better than the liner lock, and D2 seems to be better steel than ATS34, but the Wegner has done everything that I have ever asked it to without blinking and cuts very well. The blade shape and grind is very useful, and is as good as any production skinning blade that I have used and a good bit stronger than most. The handle provides a very secure grip that is both comfortable to use in a variety of grips for a long day of heavy work and stable enough for 'social' use. The locking liner is very low profile and slightly recessed, and despite the general concern on this board about the safety of liner locks for heavy use, it has never once tried to release on me.

It is heavy, and draws a little too much attention in an office setting (partially due to the solid click as it locks open), but it will never let you down. If I could only have one of the knives that you listed in your original post, it would be the Spyderco Wegner. The BM550 Griptillian echoes the basic profile and form of the Wegener, is lighter, and has the AXIS lock, so it has become a favorite for carry in dress pants for work in the office. For weekends or going out at night, the Wegner goes with me.

Why not both the D2 and the axis lock? Then just trade off.:D

The Griptilian. This knife is just plain tough. Not pretty, not flashy, but it takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. Feels good in the hand, has a great lock with smooth mechanism. Resists rust / stains with the best of 'em. If you're really looking for a USER, this one is it. The others are great knives, too, but at $60 or so for a Grippy, it's hard to look at the others for beating around.

Among Benchmade, I prefer simplicity and intelligence of 710 design (or for smaller sheeple friendly- 705).
But I agree with Revolvergeek, Spyderco's Tim Wegner is legendary folder, it is heavy but it is well-balanced, best liner lock ever made for production company. Also, is best ergonomics for production folder knife, even better more secure than Chris Reeve sebenza (which I own large and small and love). And just a tough as Sebenza, in my opinion.
Wegner Spyderco is not very old itself, but already legendary, almost like 1911 of folding knives.

Since I reprofiled the edge, I've been carrying my 730SBT clipped to RF pocket. However, I still carry either my plainedge 550 or 555 Griptilian folder in my fanny pack. In fact, I use the 550/555 for most of my cutting in general. In pure cutting, I've found no knife that can really outperform the Griptilians.

I also have the 805 Axis TSEK, which is excellent, but I have come to feel is a bit too large for my regular EDC. I have two 710 knives; a 710S and a 710BT. Both are awesome knives and still among the best of the BM lineup.

I can't say enough good things about the Spyderco Wegner. It was damn near my perfect EDC. The Wegner fills so many roles, tactical, hunter, utility. And it does them all very well. The frst thing I anted to do when I heard that Spyderco had discontinued them was to get into the fetal position and cry like a baby. I was hoping to see Spyderco keep the Wegner and add some rfinements like VG-10 and a compression lock. I have been looking for a suitable replacement ever since the demise of the Wegner but everything comes up short. The Griptilian is close. I would like to see g-10 instead of FRN though. Oh well, the search continues.

I regularly use all three of my Benchmandes - 551, 690 and 710HS.

The 690 is a great dress knife. the 154 CM gets and stays sharp.

The 710. Very nice. Holds a great edge. I haven't yet tried to "thin out" the edge. But boy does it take and keep a VERY nice edge.

551 Grip. Good steel. Takes a nice edge (I quit carrying my delica and endura as soon as I got the 551.) I like the 551 with the thumb stud. THis knife is a GREAT hard user. I really do think it's the toughest of the three. But don't get me wrong. All three will take the hard use. The 551 has the bigger scales. The 551 feel is definately addictive. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to the feel of the 710HS after carrying the 551 daily (except for "dress") for, IIRC, 9 months...

My BENCHMADE 710 HSSR McHenry & Williams,Large Axis Lock Black & M2 combo edge is an excellent knife. Dual thumbstuds, dual axis lock, reversible clip ,lanyard hole and tip-up carry make for a near perfect day to day all purpose knife.Aesthetically speaking,it's functional artwork. You will have to feel it to believe it.

I checked out all of those BM's when I was thinking about getting a one-hand folder. I didn't get one and got interested in smaller lockbacks and slipjoints for EDC, but if I had gotten one it would have been the mini-griptilian with plain blade and thumbstud. A very cool knife, and with the Axis lock a hell of a lot of knife for the money. I was going to remove the clip and just carry it in my pocket. I may still get one. I found the full-size griptilian too big.
