Which Benchmade?

It looks like the models getting recommended the most are the 710 and some variant of the 940.

I have to throw my vote towards a 941D2CF. Don't like the green handle on a 940, well, the Carbon Fiber really adds that extra little something. Oh, wait! Then there's the addition of D2 steel with a mirror polish. I think it's the sweetest thing Benchmade has to offer at the moment. It's only available as one of 500, so you would have to act fast (or pay more later).

The other one I like a lot is the 690 Limited Edition. Here again there's several variants. I like the Carbon Fiber bolster version with the ivory linen micarta slabs. That thing is pretty sweet as well.

i can sympathize w/ya as i kinda collect BM's, try to either :

*buy an older model (ie brend talon, spike,or leapord) they are always cool, and can be had for cheap on the for sale forum if ya watch close, got my leapord and spike, both LNIB, from fellow forumites, about $100 for BOTH of them. the talon is gonna be a little higher and harder to find though, imho.

* another good choice imho would be a stryker, esp a chisel grind model (910S-CG is the one i have)

*maybe a bali if ya get into them.......

*CQC7 would be cool........but everybody has one, lol

*another variation of AFCK, i so far have a 800BT,800S,800FS,3 oval hole models (804??) of which 1 is pre pro and one prototype. in fact ya might try to find some BM protos too.......but tryuing to find variations of one model is fun to me, esp if ya can find 'em at a good price - the one i really want is a proto or pre pro 800 1st gen w/the silver logo w/the black butterfly (reversed on new ones), that would be cool, and a piece of BM history also, imho

good luck

so what im live in california too and i got a 42, 31, 46a, a couple of jabs and pcc styles, theres plenty of sites that will ship to california, new graham and knifezilla come to mind, as for folders. IMO the best benchmade folder is either the 730 CFHS or the 940 D2CF. Both knives are kinda expensive though around 180. but those limited edition carbon fiber knives are NICE. as for the regular productions knives if you are on a budget one of the mini griptilians are good especially since they have so many color handle choices now. the 720 is kinda weird to me cause the blade is too short for the handle imo looks kinda stubby, the 940x series is great i prefer the 942 or 943.

For me, it would be a BM 942. It is the same knife as the 940 but with black handles and a blue spacer! I love this knife so much that I have three!!:D

Just went by the local knife shop! Forget the Griptilian (for now) I need an 940!!!

I saw one variant with BC1 coating and red handles. It was a special production. Anyone know the exact model number for that one? Anyone know where I can find one (besides the local knife shop)?

I have a 941BC1 that has red handles, a blue back spacer and a boron carbide coated blade It's a one of 500 limited run. It's a more traditional clip point blade shape than the 940. It was so sweet that I had to buy the carbon 941D2CF to go with it. I notice a trend in this thread, not only is the 940 series mentioned more than anyother, there seem to be several of us who like the design enough to have multiple examples.

So far the red one sits in the safe, but the carbon one goes almost everywhere with me.

check ebay for the special edition 94x they should have most of the different variants up for auction, i think 1sks and knifecenter has most of them too

I found the silver handled one, but nothing else...:(

BTW, if I get an aluminum handled 940, I can have it laser engraved for about $15! I'm trying to decide what I could put on it...

How about:
"BSA Troop 58"
"Be Prepared"
"Eagle Scout - 2002"

Well, I'm really leaning towards the 941BC1RED. Anyone know if I need to take special care of the blade with the BC1 coating?

the boron coating is one of the toughest around it'll hold up very well so you don't have to worry about it

I have heard it is not a corrosion protectant, is that true?

dont' quite remember if it protects against rust but the knife comes with 154cm anyways so it's already stainless

Boron Carbide does nothing, or almost nothing, to enhance the rust resistance of the steel it is applied to. It is possible to develop rust under the BC coating if used on non-stainless and "sort of" stainless steels (like D2).

However, BC does have some very desirable properties. It is Carbide so it is a very, very hard. Carbides are about the next hardest thing to diamonds. The size and distribution of carbides is one of the major differences between blade steels (although not the only one) when it come to cutting potential and edge retention.

Coating a blade with carbide makes it nearly impossible to scratch the coated surface (unlike Black Teflon (BT) coated, sulfated or blued surfaces. In the case of BC-1 a pretty cool look is possible as well. The BC-1 finish is so thin that the blade will reflect the underlying finish (level of polish). My BC-1 coated Benchmade blade looks cool, but not nearly as cool as the William Henry coated blades due to the initial blade finish before coating. I seem to recall reading that a BC-1 coating is something like 50 microns.

The only problem I've found with the BC-1 coating is it's propensity for keeping fingerprints and other markings. Soap and water just don't seem to get these blades spotless. I've found that using a product like Goof-Off or Goo-Gone immediately returns the blade to factory condition. The finish seems so smooth that things like packing tape residue seem to stick better and resist all normal methods of removal.

I think the red 941 would be a particularly good candidate for a laser engraving job and had purchased a second one for my step-son's 21st birthday so we could have a matched pair (except I was planning to get his engraved to commemorate his 21st). Before getting it engraved, I asked him his preference. He said he preferred tanto and hawkbill blades (and already had Cold Steel and Spydies in those forms) and that he'd rather have a Play Station 2. So I sold the knife to a buddy and bought him the PS2.

Remember that for the same reason the anodized aluminum finish makes all the 940 series handles a great candidate for engraving, but for the same reasons that the engraving will show through clearly, they’ll also show every scratch on the handle. That's why I still think the CF/D2 version is cooler, the carbon fiber doesn't nick that easily and it's the same color all the way through. The carbon fiber actually seems more organic. The D2 blade also seems to hold an edge a bit better than the other’s 154CM steel and cleaning up the blade is certainly simpler, but, I won't be selling my remaining red 941BC1 any time soon.

JMHO (Just My Humble Opinion)

All of BM's balisongs are great (31,42,43,46,47) or for regular folder the 690 is my very favorite, extreme smooth opening and super sexy looks, also has a 154cm blade opposed to the usual 440c.
