Which BK?

The 9 is an awesome knife but you didn't mention that one so I will move on.

For me the BK2 is to thick. They are good knives and I have 2 but I hardly use them anymore.

The BK10. I thought I would love it. I haven't used it much yet and maybe I will, I can't give much of an opinion on it since I have barely used the knife. I am lukewarm on it at this point. Not that it's a bad knife. It's a great value.

The BK7 is what I would recommend to you if the 9 is not something you are interested in. Since you will have a 4" folder in your pocket anyway this knife makes sense to me.

Any idea on what the bk12 costs? The folder would basically be for detail & as a backup. Plus its something I already have a few of (and probably more in the future). I like the bk9, just wonder if its not a little too much.

Also, is it worth stripping the coating off?

last I recall, they were $125 - they are made in batches, so it may be another month or 2 before they're back in stock.

Right, the BK12 is $125 and only available thru KnifeWorks and it will be at least March before they're available.

As I recall, there was a logistics mix-up and they sold out before production could catch back up.

Since the BK7 was first on the list, I'd stick with it instead of second-guessing. None are a "wrong choice", just a matter of personal preference.

I would take a folding saw and a bk16. The 16 is my favorite knife. I have handled a 2 and think it's too cumbersome. I don't like it for finer tasks that require more dexterity and finesse. Haven't used a 7,10or12. But of the three, the 7 would be next on my list.

I wouldn't get too worked up over which to get first, you will end up with a bunch like most of us (I'm guessing by the way you mention having a bunch of folders already). If you want a big knife the 9 or 7 would be the best choice but if you can live without the chopping powe of the big guys than the 10 would be a great mid sizer with some extra finesse.

This is not really a question. There is no "wrong" knife. That being said, out of what's available, just pick one. They all have their strengths. As far as the 7 vs. 10 vs. 2, I'd get the 10 or the 2. I feel the 7 is a little too short vs. the 9 (or 4, which is IMO a fantastic woods tool) and too long to be of good general utility (though I know others will disagree). The long clip makes batoning tough, and moves the balance too far back to chop as effectively as the 12, which is shorter....but chops and batons better (in my experience anyways). Just buy one of 'em. You can always get your money back (or most of it) and try something else if you aren't so thrilled with your choice....or you can do what 90% of us do and keep it and buy something else. Or you can turn it into something you do like. My 7 didn't get a lot of love due to me liking the 9,4 and 12 more, so:

No more trying to figure out the "utility" part and the tactical bottle opener sees plenty of action. I still wouldn't baton with it, tho.

The 12 is definitely worth the wait.
Very solid & versatile knife that screams quality!
If you gotta have one right away, then the 7 or 9 would be my suggestion.
Or just get all 3, you won't regret it.

For what the 12 costs you could get one fullsize Becker and then an 11 or 14 or maybe even a tweener. I say let the 12 come later.

The 9 will surprise you. They chop great but are still light enough that they're not difficult to use for lighter tasks. There's some kind of sorcery going on with that thing.

People put too much thought into whether or not to strip their knives. leave it on until you can't stand how beat up it looks then strip it. Maybe you'll like the worn look.

Despite not listing it as one of your options, I think the 16 is a good knife for what you are looking for. I have the 7 and had a 2. I like the 7 but it is too cumbersome for all day carry for me. As a camp knife it is great, but the 16 is really just an all around great knife for camp, hiking, or daily carry.

Sound reasoning.

Without question, the BK-4 but if you don't like a bent knife, then get the BK-12. It's a bit more money but well worth it. I base this on having a BK-4 for 25 years +. I also had a BK-7, sold it, have a BK-2 - too thick for the length. I have a BK-9, still greatly prefer the BK-4.

Well, I went with the BK7. I think its the right match between size & versatility that I'm looking for right now. I feel good about it, like one of the other posters said I'm sure this is just my first, not my last. I believe I will plan to leave the coating on for awhile, although I do like the looks of the stripped blades. Thanks to all for your advice & recommendations, it is great to be able to get fast honest feedback when there is a question.

Ended up putting a para military 2 on the order as well, I think I have a problem...

Yeah, you don't have a BK9.

If you own a BK9 your car will get better gas milage, your house is 20% less likely to be destroyed by a meteorite, and while you won't have complete control over the creatures of the forest, they're more likely to take what you have to say into consideration. And if they don't you can vanquish them with the BK9. Plus, legend has it that deep deep in the woods is a mysterious doughnut shop that gives a 10% discount on apple fritters to BK9 owners. If you can find it...

I drive a Toyota with a 12 mile round trip to work so gas mileage is not a big issue. My house is insured, and I don't like it much anyway. I can command the forest creatures with DPMS, Glock, RIA, Remington, and Smith & Wesson. And I prefer maple doughnuts.

Lol, actually the 7 fulfills a bit of a childhood fantasy. I had an infatuation with knives as a kid as well, especially big knives. I can remember many times being at gun shows with my dad, and pestering him until he would give me $10. I would then run off and buy the biggest knife I could find for that price, only to have my mom confiscate it as soon as I got home. One knife I always drooled over was Rambo's. While not a spot on match, the 7 is close enough.

BK9 is about the same size as a Rambo knife. The 7 is smaller. #lawyered

If you keep not owning a BK9, you're going to make it angry...

I'd choose the BK 10 in the scenario you describe. I own the 7 and 2 as well, but something about the 10 just keeps me reaching past the other two to use it again and again.
