I think I'm going to order one of the DeWalt K28770K portaband saws soon. I'd like to order the appropriate blades along with it, but I'm in the dark as to what I need. Looking for specific recommendations as to brands, specs, etc.

I will use it to cut steel, wood, etc. Typical knifemaking stuff.

Thanks!

The 14 TPI Lennox or Starrets are good and for heavier stuff they make a 10-14 which has a combination of tooth sizes a coupe 14 then a couple 10s.

Go to a welding supply house and get there carbon blade.
all the welders and pipefiters use them. cost about $20.00 around here IF YOU DON'T FORSE THEM THEY WILL LAST FOREVER.

It looks like the online vendor where I was going to order from only has Milwaukee blades. Would these be decent as well, or should I skip them and find a source for the others? Also, these are bi-metal blades...is this what I want?

Would either the 14 TPI or 10-14 be suitable for cutting wood and other handle materials in addition to steel/brass/stainless/copper, or is there another type of blade I should buy?

Vern,
By welding supply, do you mean one of the Airgas-type stores or something different? Also, do these stores sell blades for the portable bandsaws?

Got a great deal from tool king on that same saw with case. I'd check with them when you're ready to get one. Probably have decent selection on blades too.

I think that one will work just fine for you. If you have a Fastenal near you, I recommend you check with them as well. I bought a 3 pack there for mine and they have worked out perfectly. BTW, Fastenal's price for the Dewalt was the same that I paid with shipping from Tool King, just in case. :)

yes thats the one i get mine at.
if you are cutting carbon steel, the carbon will out last 3 of others.

Normally I'm all about Lenox and/or Starrett... however, I bought a pack of 3 DeWalt blades on Amazon... got them on sale for $7. For all 3!!! And they have turned out to be excellent blades. They are 10/14 vari-tooth. :)

Cliff Davis,
Fastenal's online price is significantly higher than Tool King's, did you mean an in-store price there?

Thanks to all for your advice, I think I'll try a couple of the Milwaukee blades and see how it goes.

I use Morse Bi-metal blades on mine... I get them from my local saw shop guy who used to make the blades for my old saw. They come in a box of 3 and I pay $24 for the box.. They will come in 14tpi or 18tpi. I buy both. I use the 18tpi for really thin stuff like ti liners and the 14tpi for just about everything else. They seem to last quite a while. The thing I have noticed with the porta band is that the blades cut great and then all of a sudden they just don't cut any more. There really isn't any getting dull period. I don't know if that is the blade design or just the way these saws work. Anyway, my point is, "make sure you always have an extra blade around"!!
