Which Busse as a gift . . . . .

Since I just bought three of them, two of which are for my daughters, I suggest the BATACs currently on display on the busse website. I spent a month pondering what to get the girls, and I think this is a knife that suits them now and will last them a lifetime.

Anything smaller and they will feel cheated, anything bigger and they would be intimidated. A good 5" blade and the right size grip help make this configuration particularly useful, and should suit your boy well, even if it isn't the most practical size to begin with.

My youngest daughter(17 year old) said the warden was a small knife to her (and she didn't sound very impressed by it), and the FBM was too much (she sounded like "what on earth would I use this for?"), so that pretty much gauged it for me. Both are seasoned hunters, and already have other non Busse knives, so it is time for an upgrade I reckon, and the BATAC was it.

As far as whether the kids will damage their knives somehow, the two caveats for owning Busse knives are: 1. Good luck trying, and 2. What was that warranty policy again?

I keep buying my two boys Swamp Rats, and lately, Dogs.

The lesser(?) Busses don't seem to keep their interest.

But they do get pretty excited when I pull a Steel Heart or Battle Mistress out of the safe.

I guess they have their dad's appreciation for the finer things in life. :)

What's it gonna be?

The Vic sounds good also.

Let him be 13 and give him something he can appreciate, but also something that doesn't put a big ding in the wallet.

Rob

He chose a folder for now so that he can carry it on scouting trips.

I plan to let him use one of my small Busse blades when we go camping together.

He can begin to learn some survival skills (like battoning) for which a fixed blade is best.

I'm sure he'll be having a lot of fun in the next few years with a father that dedicated to learning wilderness skills... Fantastic job, he'll love you for it!

Love it! :D

I agree that letting him pick out his own is a good idea. I managed to go through almost the entire busse catalog by switching out knives for other knives without to much money lost during most of it.

Hearing andre say that made me realize that between my edc cutters and choppers, I am more likely to want a super high end prybar and chopper then I am an edc cutter. and the prybar will come before the chopper in quality.

It sounds dumb, but when I'm prying something apart, its at that point where I'm applying the most pressure at close range that I want my knives to hold strong without damage.

Personally, if I had one knife and one knife only ever for anything, I'd probably go with the sjtac regular right now. It's got the best of all worlds. BUT, it is a little more advanced in use and carry then the badger attack tac.

LOL, you could always promise him a super high end skinner for his 18th birthday - and custom order it now hopeing that it gets there by then :D  :D :foot:

Sounds like a plan!

Try for a variety of sizes and shapes with the Busse/Rats/whatever to see what tickles his fancy. Nothing huge of course, but say GW to perhaps Badger or NO size. There are a lot of blade shapes among those sizes.

Case in point, my 19 YO could care less about Busse, or the Rats. Aside from a Basic 5, the rest just leave him cold. ALL of them!

Awhile back, did a little trading with Dwayne (Leatherman), and got a Gib Guinguard forged Bowie, stag grips and a handcarved Leatherman sheath.

The kid saw that and about wet his pants! Not the size so much as the brass fittings and stag handle and of course that purty sheath. Like a poor mans Desert Rose. LOL

It will be his of course, he just doesn't know it yet. 21'st Bday or Christmas.

It was to be a DCBB Uncle Mofo, but his eyes did not come close to lighting up when that was in his hand.

Go figure!

Rob
