Which camera to take

I plan to leave soon on a 5-6 days to the high sierra. I always carried a canon in a camera bag and a tripod tied to the back..

Its about 5lb on top of everything else i carry.. One of the big problems is that the camera bag hangs in the front and gets on the way.. The other choice i got is a small canon camera that wont take pics as nice but i can take up ward of 900pic and its SMALL.. I cant dicide which one, Afraid i would miss some great shoot not having the nice camera. But i got a bad knee and a damaged heel. So i want to get the weight down. This trip would be a test to see how my leg would do. Its one of the reason i always go alone so if my leg give out and i need to stop i wont ruin the trip for anyone else. I think maybe i should use a coin to dicide:cool: . Just wanting to know what you guys would do???

Well Sasha - if its not on film it never happened. That the first rule!

Take the one you are comfortable with. The pics will be good enough and you will feel better.

Don't take any food along. You can save enough weight that way to carry the big Canon.

Just kidding. If you're like me, it would be a tough choice. You don't want to miss a good once-in-a-lifetime shot, on the one hand. On the other hand, just what can your leg stand? Sometimes it's better to get a lesser, but still acceptable, shot, and still be able to walk.

I'm using Ricoh GR these three years.
Not a very robust camera but easy to handle, small and light weighted.

LOL Kgd, That is so true... I did learn that the hard way as well... You would have me carry a 100lb camera just so could post more pics for you lol..
Protourist it seems that everytime i dont take the good camera i miss a shoot i wish i could take... Maybe i ditch the tripod??

I carry a little gorilla-pod with mine. It weighs next to nothing and will do just about anything you need it to. Perhaps one of these may help.

Sasha, never ditch the tripod. I Would rather have a lesser camera that was rock steady on a tripod, than blurry pics from a top-notch camera. I used to be a commercial photographer and unless it was a really bright sunny day where I could use a very high shutter speed (and it isn't always), I always shot from a tripod.

Its mostly bright up there at the 10,000ft+ but for some shoots i love to have the tripod....
Protourist i seen the Gorilla-pod but it just never worked for what i like to use one for

Only you know how happy you will be with the photos from each camera.
Personally, I would be more likely to go with my small camera and a clamp mount in place of a tripod. Only you know what the tradeoffs are worth to you.
Good luck and have a great trip. I look forward to seeing your pics whichever camera you decide to take.

Small camera and small, lightweight tripod. I don't take my camera anywhere without a tripod and the newer, compact digital cameras can take a pretty fine picture. In fact, I have trouble telling the difference between some $150 digitals and $1500 ones, granted I only have my white belt in photography. :(

LOL Doc mostly there is no diffrence that you can see.. Unless you want to make a large print, very large print.. Or under some conditions.. There are other diffrences but for most you dont notice any.. Thats why im not sure which one..
But you know that if i see Big foot you would want the pic to come out right dont you???? How else can i prove to any of you that i did see one and that he likes a hot cup of chocolate...

Here is a night time shoot on a full moon night.

i like for portability the idea of the canon g10 offers manual digital settings in a almost range finder type body... also u can get crafty with self timer and rocks instead of a tripod if needed or a hiking staff that has a screw ont he bottom to use as a monopod or some kind of tripod head to attach to homade wooden tripods

If you could afford it, get a Canon G10 camera. It's compact but has the function and control of a full blown SLR. The quality has been tested on a number of web sites to be outstanding. One site (luminous landscapes) accidentally compared it to a medium format digital camera system (not to a SLR) and was shocked on how good it really was! Almost surpassing the quality of a full digital SLR. Wow!

I've seen the quality of the earlier versions on a monitor compared to SLR and the images I've seen are pin sharp with very little distortion (cannot been seen with human eye).

Then if you can get a smaller camera, you should be able to get a smaller lighter tripod as well. Win-win situation. (If you can afford it)

Not going to buy another camera just now.. If im going to spend money it would be for lenses lol..
Ray i got both cameras in front of me trying to dicide lol...

+1.

For the same reasons the OP is discussing, I got a Canon G9. Daytime, outdoor shots are just as good as you'll get from an SLR. At higher ISO's, the SLR will knock its socks off, but unless you're planning lots of nighttime shots, you won't miss it.

Don't ditch the tripod, though. Personally, I'm more inclined to carry a little tiny tripod (like this http://www.amazon.com/Vidpro-Tripod...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1243837361&sr=8-12 ) in my backpack when I plan on walking long distances. It's easy to find a rock or stump to put it on and it's 1/10 the weight of my full sized one.

Sometimes I'll go hiking just to take pictures, though, which is when I'm happy carrying the whole shebang.

If you are really into photography and don't take this trip very often, I believe it would be a good idea to take the best equipment.

Along with the little pocket tripod that someone mentioned earlier, perhaps a walking stick monopod, would be the ticket?

Canon powershot A580/90 is a good little camera with many of the funtions of a DSLR

if you use an open source alternative firmware (DHCK) that boots off your memory card you get even more funtionality, including saving in RAW mode. I have been using it for the last two weeks with no problems. RAW mode eats up your card space though - so beware.

I carry two cards, one with DHCK and one without. The one without allows me to start the camera in the camera firmware for taking 'holiday' snaps and the other boots into DHCK for taking 'arty' shots which I may need the RAW files for.

For the tripod I would love to get my hands on a Vec long handled hawk from the Axe forum on this site. The handle is synthetic and hollow but can be modded to take a camera mount. Walking stick, monopod and axe in one package.

If you have problem with your knees I have heard from others that walking poles can make a great difference to the stresses involved.

How large is the camera and how much do they usually cost? Can you post a picture of your's and not a stock picture from a website, please? :)
