which CF Military should I get?

Which one should i get?

S90V
s30v
BG-42

Yes.:D

All kidding aside, I would say it depends on your sharpening skills and what you use for sharpening. I find it easy to get and maintain an extremely good edge with the Sharpmaker & a strop on both the BG-42 & the S30V models, with the BG having better edge holding. I have heard that the S90V can be difficult to sharpen unless using diamond sharpeners, apparently they can be just as tough as ZDP-189, so regular maintenance would be the key for that one. I think it would also depend on what uses you have planned for it as an EDC.

Unless I'm mistaken, which is definitely possible:D, you won't be able to find the S30V Millie with Carbon Fiber scales, just black G-10 for that steel. I have the BG-42 and S90V versions as well, and between those, as wicked as the S90V is, I still prefer my BG-42 for sharpening ease. Besides, it's not like the BG-42 goes dull fast!!

Also, if you like S30V, be aware that a new version is coming out soon with a black blade and digital camo G-10 handle:eek: That one sounds pretty damn sweet!! and will definitely be coming my way.

Cheers,
Jon

iirc there is an s30v/cf version.

the bg42 is not easliy acquired any longer. the s90v is pretty readily available, but im also concerned with sharpening.

I have all three, and I carry the S90V. It is my go-to knife for the tough jobs. It is a bit time-consuming to sharpen, even on diamond hones, but for me the effort is worth it. It holds an edge better than ZDP-189 for the things I do every day.

The S30V/Carbon Fiber was a very short run, only 400 pieces made. If you are looking for a collector's item, it is the most rare.

I like easy to sharpen knifes that only take a few licks. So i guess the BG42 is for me then.

BTW have a early model Military with a 440 blade. How hard is that to sharpen compared to the BG42

First I have to say that you cannot go wrong with any of the cf millies.

I have the bg-42 and the S90v version and I am seriously considering picking up a second S90V. I do my sharpening wif da Bling-Bling:rolleyes: so the S90V is not as bad as it sounds to sharpen but wow does it hold on to an edge!!

I mainly cut abrasive materials ie dirty rope, wire, the dreaded sheet plastic (lol), carpet, etc. Not to mention normal edc stuff, food, opening mail and the like and I am able to go significantly longer between sharpenings than with my other knives (my only direct comparison is my BG-42 millie but I have many other knives in a variety of steels (S30v, 154cm, AUS-8, 440C, 420HC,etc)with different bladeshape edge geometry heat treat etc.).

I am not claiming it performs miracals but in my personal use there is a significant difference in edge holding. I am sure Spyderco's spot on heat treat and the good edge geometry of the millie add to the mix but so far I am sold on the stuff.

i have found bg42 to be relatively simple to sharpen. i have owned two folders that have seen some use in bg42, and dont find it any more time consuming to sharpen than anything else.

i would guess the 440 would be the easiest to sharpen.

You would be wrong. ;) :D

The 440 he is talking about is 440V, a.k.a. S60V. BG-42 sharpens itself by comparison.

I keep saying this, BG-42! I love mine and I have two of them. I am in the Army so if Spyderco puts out the Milie in Digi Camo and Black Blade, PE! I hope, that will will be my next Military Model.

indeed, but I would be very careful buying a s30C/CF model off ebay, as I think they are pretty 'fakeable' - all you need is to get a regular s30v AND a bg-42/s90v model and switch blades ; if the buyer does not open the knife apart to see the date markings on the blade, he may think he got the real deal.............

I only saw pics of the digi camo w/ an uncoated s30v blade, but a black blade would be really cool

It would be very easy to spot (and prove) a fake of that sort. The real S30V/CF has a single nested liner on the lock side. Starting with the BG-42 sprint, they have a second partial liner nested on the other scale. It is easy to see without taking the knife apart. You might not be able to tell from pictures, but it would be easy to dispute once you received the knife. If eBay still works like it used to, and if you paid by PayPal, you might even get your money back without returning the knife.
