Which custom CQC would you pick?

I have been looking for a custom cqc for awhile now. And out of nowhere a Custom 5, 6, 7, 12, snubby ( think 14 ) and a commander have been offered. All NIB customs, waved and bolstered with thick liners. I am sure I can't afford them all, so which one(s) should I get first. In other words, which one(s) am I least likely to come across anytime soon for a fair market price. Which brings me to my next question - what is a fair price for each? Anybody bought any of these lately who would be willing to "guess" what they should go for? You see, I want to make sure that neither side gets taken advantage of ( OK, mostly me). I am really new to Emerson, so thanks for any opinions that may be offered up.

well i paid $1000 for a bolstered non waved '6 a while back and considered it a good price, '7s run a little less than a '6, 5's are right around the '6, maybe less, 12's and '14's $800 or so.

the '6 is considered by most to be the most desirable.

a real custom commander (they dont call them commanders, IIRC, MV1?? i'll have to look later and see) would be worth the most probably ya rarely see them, some have longer blades than others, they were made for navy SEALs, a legit one would run $1200 maybe more.

of them all for me?? a '6 hands down.

give me a shout at cvettercr1@aol.com and give me a shot at what ya dont want.

amongst all, go for the CQC6 - it's the most desirable. if it's too small for you, the CQC7 feels better in the hand. dealers charge anywhere from $1150-1250 for the 6 or 7, depending on whether it is waved, thick or thin liners, secondary bevel or zero ground.

custom commanders are also highly desirable, but the grail is the ES1-M (sorta like a supercommander).

if you have a good price for the 6, let me have a shot too.

id probably go for a 7, 6 is a bit to small for me.

best place to get one is a show. they are all 550.00.

that's provided you win the lottery...

and yeah.

they're all sweet, although the '6 is generally the most prestigious, if the most common.

something to look out for: recent customs are being made with a 0.090" linerlock instead of the older 0.050" ones. if you're actually going to use it, i recommend one with thicker lockbar.

that rules me out. unless someone has a free ticket for me to traverse 13 timezones:p

yes, good point on the size of the 6. a lot of people are surprised when they handle the 6 - it is quite a slim knife (the way I like it) but large hands might find it on the smaller side. the 7 feels really good in large hands.

the 9 has a small handle....if the 6 is small, the 9 is smaller.

Now it all makes sense. Thanks, and sorry for posting such a silly question in this thread. I thought it was some type of metal.

the ES-1M was what i was thinking of, i have never heard of any of those changing hands, i bet they would be worth some $$.

ES-M1... Is that the one that is kind of commander-ish in appearance. If so, how is it different. Can somebody point me to a picture of this knife as the web is yielding nothing on my searches.

Rhinos are probably the least common of the customs. A pair sold about 2 years back in a NY show and went for 4500 each if I recall correctly.

Hi, The ES1-M is basically the same size as the Commander. Years back, Ernie designed the ES1-M at the request of the SEALS(IIRC), and this was then a custom-(available to military only) model. Later, the CM-1 was introduced, which was the same, but lacked the wave. This CM-1 was made available to the general public. Finally, in 1998, Ernie created the Commander under his production facility Emerson Knives Inc. This is basically the ES1-M, but 20% smaller in size. Later on, he went on to create a super-sized Commander, which he called the Super-Commander. This is the same size as the ES1-M, but a production version..

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Nick

Oh, further to add:

The custom "EMERSON SPECWAR KNIVES" Commander is still called a commander. Note that it is the smaller version of the ES1-M. Yeap. And in this year's Solvang show, Ernie and his crew refered to the Bolstered ES1-Ms as Bolstered-SuperCommanders, whereas in the past they(Custom ES1-M), were only refered to as ES1-Ms. So yeap...

Cheers,
Nick

probably the least common emerson customs and the most expensive are the early pre-tacs some of which had ivory handles and other bling on 'em, the last one i saw sold went for ~$3K and that was at least 5 yrs ago,

bummer, maybe a friend in the states could hook you up.

at the plaza cutlery show, which is on the smaller scale, he had 25 knives. he said for solvang he was planning on bringing 75 or so. i didnt make that one, so cant say for sure.

and yes, you have to win the lottery. once they hit the secondary market prices double and triple.

vipers are very nice for sure, i am gonna get one myself, eventually, hopefully lol.
