I am looking for a GOOD and inexpensive dehydrator for backpacking and the like.

Any suggestions?

Also - I am looking for the site that talks all about baggie eating while on the trail.

As for the dehydrator, I've had a few that were ok but I will have to recommend the Excaliber brand. They are not cheap, but you may be able to find one second hand or catch one of the half off sales. They are miles ahead of any other dehydrator I've used.

Hi Talfuchre. Thats the dehydrator i got and it works great. If you do order it make sure you get atlist 3-4 extra trays they fill up fast. It works great. I saved half its price on the first backpacking trip i took by not buying any dry food.
I saved the address for the freezerbag cooking but when i tryed to open it just now it came back as its not there no more... It was the best one out there. If i find it i would post it.

Harvest Maid is a pretty good one too.

Speaking of dehydrating, and hiking.

I have a buddy who has a monster house with a tin roof on top of a hill.

2 summers ago he had a monster crop of watermelons. He took the rind off and then dried them on his roof on racks with screens.

He brought some backpacking with us and it was great. Sort of like cotton candy and bubble gum. The seeds were great tooo.

QuietMike they sure changed the format of the site from last time i been on it. Which was a long time ago. I never did follow the recipe they posted but got plenty of ideas from there and done it my way..

HD dry watermellon is awsome. I done some as well. I do lots and lots of veg for my trips.

Check out the Nesco FD-75PR. It was recommended to me by an author of a backpacking cookbook and I do not regret its purchase one bit. It is a nice unit, very powerful, easy to clean, and can expand to something like 12 trays. There is a big thread about it and dehydrating in general over on my forums.

I borrowed a few different dehydrators from friends and neighbors (as well as having made my own and using the oven). I ultimately settled on an Excalibur, and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. A good dehydrator really is worthwhile if you do a lot of food drying.

My wife has heard good things about this one as well. Sort of the Toyota / Honda of dehydrators.

Now to find a cheapie for my garage in order to dry out my sheaths as I make them.

I also have a Nesco dehydrator. Its the only one I have ever head so I can't compare it to others but I like it a lot. It's expandable (up to 12 shelves I believe) and there are inserts for making fruit rollups. It also is not very loud.

You realy cant go wrong with any of the brand name dehydrator. Find one you like at a good price and you are set... Now all we need to do is share some recipes for drying..
