I sat down the other day and started looking at the knives I now have. Even though I knew I had sold several it still came as a shock to realize I had a total of 6 (six) knives that I would consider collectible. I have a few beaters that while good knives are no longer in any type of pristine condition, if you know what I mean.

At one time I had well over 100 knives of all types, styles, and origins. I had mostly production stuff and had a lot of the so called commenrative knives. These of course turned out to hardly be worth the price of a plain jane version. I had over a dozen customs at one time and have probably gone through at least 35 to 40 custom folders.

Guess it boils down to the fact that once I really discovered what I was looking for in a knife I found it and have prety much stuck with it. My meager collection now consists of;

1. Large Classic Sebenza with brown leather inlays
2. Large Classic Sebenza with Madagascar rosewood
3. Large Classic Sebenza with Bloodwood
Guess you can tell I like Sebenza's!:D
4. Camillus Cuda MAXX
5. Case Teardrop Jack w/stag handles from the early
50's.
6. CRK&T Walker Lock in an auto version

I have a couple of Spydies that are small and take turns riding in my left pocket but are of the "un-pristine" variety I have already mentioned. Great knives though, but don't think anyone would want them in present condition except me.

Note there is not a single custom in the bunch. There was, but, and I'll leave it there.

There is a custom that is set to arrive in the morning that i hope to have become part of my edc rotation of Sebbies. This is a Kit Carson large model 16!:D :D Looking for good things out of the Carson!  :D

So, I guess that will bring my collection to 7. Well 7 is one of the numbers of completion!:)

My first couple of knives were fixed blades, then I realized that I preferred folders (various types and locks). But recently I have been picking up a few more fixed blades after not buying any for close to a decade and more noticeably I have been moving towards balisongs as of late. Wonder where I'll be next year.

Well my collection has recently evoloved to blades that has a round hole in it ;)

Mine has definitely taken some strange turns. Mine started out with miscellaneous $20-$40 EDC type of knives, e.g. Buck 110's, Gerber Gator etc. I then discovered E-Bay and got hooked on antique (1850-1940) MOP slipjoints. I then started adding celluloids from 1911-1933 including my prizes of Golden Rule Flappers. Then I started in on just about anything from the 1800's. Its just in the past year that I really started getting into the tactical folders, custom fixed blades and even a couple balisongs. But even my interests in tac folders is really developing, for example, through trading, I've discovered that for my personal use that the "big ones" such as the Cuda Maxx and Tops Magnum are more of a curiosity than anything pratical for me (Maxx and Magnum lovers please don't flame me, they're nice knives but just to damn big for me), whereas I absolutely fell in love with the large Sebenza Classic, my WH bone/sterling lancet and my Dalton Companion. Where it will go from here...who knows. But even with all of my trading/selling I can't bear to sell my MOP's.

My "collection" in my opinion can't really be called a collection. I don't really consider myself a knife collector. I am a knife user. I only keep what I will use. Everything else gets sold or traded.

That being said, what I tend to hang onto most are smaller fixed blades. I have several fixed blades with a blade length of 5.5" or less and I use them all. They are my favorites. I do have a few large fixed blades and a few tactical folders and even a couple of slipjoints, but what I am always on the lookout for is samller fixed blades.

Can you call it a collection if you use all of them? Maybe I own an assortment of users... When I hear the word "collection" I think of a bunch of purty knives that will never see daylight...

When i started my collection, I was hoping to get as many different varieties of steels, handle material and makers as possible. First with 3 crkts, three kershaws,a sog, coldsteel, smith and wesson and six spydercos. With steels ats 34, 55, aus 6 and 8, 420jmod, 425 mod , 440a and 440 c, cpm 440, san mai and soon gin-1 and bg 42

It all started with a Spyderco Endura about 4 years ago. From there I went to CRKT, Kershaw, Benchmade, Emerson, SOG, Victorinox, Cold Steel and Ka-Bar. My two favourite right now are BM and Emerson.

Mostly I buy and collect high end production folders. Not enough money or exposure to customs right now to have that much interest in them. I think this may be a good thing for now.

I started with folders, going from Bucks and Spydercos to Sebenzas. With the exception of SAKs and multitools (which I love), I think the Sebenza is kinda the end of the road for my modest folder collection. I won't say that I'll never buy another folder that's not a Sebenza, but if I do it'll likely be a custom.

So, where does that leave me? Fixed blades! I have no decent fixed blades, so now I'm going to concentrate my attention there. On my wish list now are the Buck/Strider Solution, the Al Mar SERE Operator, a Mk VI or Mountaineer II from CRK, and others.

I buy what I like.
All of my knives are users, but one- a Joe Cordova Boot knife with stag scales made back who knows when.

I like smallish, nice fixed blades, and mid size tac folders. As of this moment Ive got a tim herman wall st tac fixed, wall st tac folder, carson lg m4 clip point s30v and CF, tom krein (used to work for dozier) fairbain dagger, and a badass camp knife/bird and trout rig coming from my very good friend maxtheknife, all on order...plus the duncan auto coming in a few weeks.

wheres it going? you decide.

Mine is more oriented to custon folders, specifically from Mayo and Ralph. Then there are also the Busse basics that I have.

My "collection" isn't really going anywhere in particular. I have fixed blades, folders, plain and fancy. All are useable tools. For me, a knife has to be a useable knife first. So I never buy fantasy blades with useless handles, funky blades, or anything in 420J.

1. Yes, of course it's a collection.
2. I will NEVER understand why so many supposed knife "enthusiasts" (of all persuasions) have such negative feelings about "purty" knives?:(

I would be majoring in fixed blades, getting a PhD in small blades. And I would have a minor in slipjoints.
I think the area I see my collection/obsession evolving into is in slipjoints. I currently have and use stockmans on a daily basis, but am thinking I need other patterns... just because!;)
I still favor small fixed blades as my most common carry and will likely continue to add to this portion of my collection.

Lately it's been headed towards more modern stuff...:)

Good topic - I have also been thinking about the strange twists and turns my knife collecting has taken. I started innocently enough with just a CRKT Point Guard. "It's only one knife, and I can stop any time I want." Yeah, right! I then moved on to lots of productions, first CRKT and then other brands, but typically just one or two models from each brand. The next step was getting my first Sebenza, followed shortly thereafter by other CRK products. From there I started to drift into customs.

About 6-9 months ago I finally took a careful and honest look at my collection and admitted to myself that if I'm going to spend $400-$800 on a custom or high-end production, it should have at least some practicality for everyday use. Since I work in an office environment, I started to concentrate on small, lightweight gents knifes. I have also noticed that my number of new knife purchases per month/year is declining, athough that could be attributed in part to the average knife cost increasing as well (there's only so much cash to go around). That's where I am today. No telling where things will go tomorrow. :)

I was very heavy into Autos just two years ago. I've turned Spartan, in that I only keep a few working blades for carry. I still have a Ultratech, but that's the only auto. Thinking of getting a Mini-UDT. Otherwise a couple of CRK's, a couple of neckers, and I've ordered my first custom....(at least the first custom that I'll keep)

:)

I started out collecting large bowie/military type knives, then went into buying tactical folders but now collect mainly Spyderco's. I have recently bought both Becker combat kives and both Swamp Rats, so I am possibly going back to where I started!:D

I started out collecting whatever appealed to me whether I had a use for it or not. About a year or so ago I decided to go for quality over quanity, even though it would mean fewer knives. A fellow i know in town who is as knife nutty as I has gone in the other direction. We were talking about this the other night and that is what prompted me to come up with this topic.

As I misstated the knives I actually have in my original post. I forgot to add a couple of fixed blade knives. I have a Gerber Yari and a Pack River camp knife. Along with the Carson mdl 16 that just came this morning I actually have a total of 9 (nine) knives. If you count my beaters you can still count them all on both hands and one foot!

Course I don't regret the way I've moved as I have several quality knives that have given and still do give me immense enjoyment.

The newest acquisition, the Carson Mdl 16 is one more SWEET knife. I had forgotten what a quality piece Kit makes. Wish I could post a picture but can't. The knife can be seen at www.robertsoncustomcutlery.com
