Which direction has your collection taken?

I WUZ gonna say that I have been working about three years on putting together a nice Microtech collection, but Mr. Gray just shamed me with his photo:eek:

Every knife that I own [with the exception of about 20] I use. The only collection I have are the dozen or so MT's that I have, the rest are users. The list of wants now runs about two pages

I started with all production knives until I found BFC and started to learn. Now my tastes are more custom than production. But damn do I love tactical folders!!!!

and Rick, that photo sure is nice of what is probably a HUGE MT collection. Wanna adopt me? ;)

Artsig,

good thread. My collection is made of knives I use, but one trend has been persistent as of late - shorter blades. I have a Dozier Yukon Hunter and a MEUK by blade for fixed blades. A small seb, BM770, BM710, Spydie Delica, and a BM735 on the way.

The movement has been towards blades that are easy to carry and are discreet. However, I want to start buying and using larger blades made from carbon steel such as the Swamp Rat line, BK&T Magnum Camp, and maybe a custom.

The longer I am around knives, the more I value the cutting power of carbon steel.

RGRAY has attached this image

What's that, let's see 40 X (somewhere between $140 and $400)= carry the 1 add the 8,subtract the aw shoot that's a lotta $$.

Are you sure your not a dealer?

As far a collections go I would say I really have several smaller collections.

Slipjoints, I tend to collect unusual openers,(twistring openers, Magic Knives, by Colonial/Imperial and whatever tickles my fancy.

Locking Folders, Auto Lockers, BM'S, Spydie's, almost any One Hand Opener.

Fixed Blades, mostly Neck Knives, and Customs,(sometimes Customs are cheaper as fixed blades, but that's no hard fast rule).

Also I like Pearl Handled anything.:D

I started with slipjoints, got a couple of Bali's in 1985, got on the Rambo kick with survival knives, then Buck fever, Bowies, and back to slipjoints, and the most tactical folding knife besides my Bali's right before I came here was a Buck Crosslock which was a pretty decent knife and S&W SWAT:barf: :barf: Oh, I had a SOG Tomcat, and Spyderco Police SS that I bought in 1994. I forgot about these.

Since the forums, and you BASTIDS, I have gone to BM's, number of Spydies, and an EMERSON BY GOD COMMANDER. I remember my first trade here on the forums was for a Brend Tactical. That knife was cool, but I really didn't like the weak lockup, and I swapped it for a Spyderco Police G-10 plainedge. Thats when it hit me...I MUST HAVE MORE SPYDIES!

Over the last few months the CUSTOM bug is getting to me, and I don't know if I can stop it. I do want to say THANK YOU for all of the valuable info you have shared over the last couple of years, I have listened to you, learned alot, and still learning. I have alot of respect for a number of you guys. YA BASTIDS!

Thanks guys.

No dealer; just a nut.

I didn't have room for the 2/98 Blue L-UDT.

I just got hooked on trying to collect all of the UDT; plain edge and non damascus. :)

I also collect Left Handed and small (2 inch blade) Daltons.

Anyone have a Left Handed California Special; like the red one?

Well,in the folder department, I seem to have gone to the tactical folder route. I first found tactical folders when the Spyderco Police model first came out. That was even before they beveled the outside edges of the handle. I used that great knife to death it seems. Then out came the BM AFCK, I got one of those, and used that for years. THEN, I found Bladeforums. You guys and gals have taught me a wealth of information on knives. Everything except how to refrain from buying them faster then I can afford!  Since I found BF the collection of folders has grown quite quickly. No custom folders, but I got a couple of BF limited Sifu, A Camillus Madd Maxx, a Strider GB, MT Socom Elite, etc. etc. The list goes on and on. Now adays the problem is what knife to carry each day. Not a bad problem I admit!
On the fixed blade front I seem to have fallen in love with the Khukuri, and Bill Martino over at the HI forum has been able to supply my every wish. It sure is turning in to a far more expensive habit since I found BF. But, I am sure that ALL of you know what I mean on that note!:D ;)

My goal hasn't changed, but the things I collect sure have. Let me explain.

Entering my forties, I hadn't really had a tough folder since my Buck 110 disappeared. I wanted a good jackknife, and I started doing research. I finally bought a Benchmade 970SBT, basically a CQC7. The problem was that now I had developed a relationship with an on-line merchant, and the whole thing went to pieces!

I got started on Microtechs, first the Tantos, then the clip points and finally the LCC's. During that course I also bought far too many drawer queens and stuff I couldn't use. My wife joined the fray after seeing a Kershaw Boa.

Earlier this year I re-evaluated where I was and decided that my original goal was still valid. I now carry a Strider AR, and I feel the journey is completed.

Of course, I still look.

1. Yes, of course it's a collection.
2. I will NEVER understand why so many supposed knife "enthusiasts" (of all persuasions) have such negative feelings about "purty" knives?:(

I DON'T have negative feelings about "purty" knives. It's all good to me, but I'd never use something like that so I don't buy 'em. I really do like to look at beautiful knives made from exotic materials, etc. but I see little point in owning something I can't or won't use.

And why do watch enthusiasts have such negative feelings toward diamond encrusted Rolexes?? Anyway...

In answer to the question, I never sway from "tacticals" but the style changes. I was into recurve blades for awhile, then bowies, then square tip prybars, now I will start looking for "banana" shaped blades. Oh yes, I was into folders but I am moving toward fixed blades right now. Actually, I am quite surprised by how often my tastes change...usually I get quite hooked to one style. It has gotten to the point where I am scared to order a knife because I know that my tastes will change by the time it arives

My collection consists of only Spyderco knives. Somethin' about that Hole. ;)

Started out early with slip joints, later in life went to Cold Steel, then Benchmade, Sypderco, Sebenza and so on. Price willing to spend has increased with my income and the lenght of time between fixes has decreased drastically over the last two years. I blame the last on these knifeforums. You guys gotta stop influencing me to spend, spend, spend. :p

I can remember when I was perfectly happy with a Gerber EZ-out until a motorcycle bud convinced me that I was a sinner undone. Next it was a gradual path towards higher and higher quality production folders. Then a custom sneaked in (a John Kubasek) and I ws hooked on them. Now I am buying fewer and fewer knives of higher and higher quality. I've got my name on the Tom Mayo list for probably middle of next year. Is this a hobby or a habit? - Lee

A Lalique ornament? A Robert Markle painting? A small, inexpensive Picasso pencil study?;)

About 7 years ago I started out down the tactical folder path. My folder acquizitions slowed way down after I got my large and small Sebenzas. While this was in progress, I was also acquiring small shop production FB field knives. Now its customs, all fixed blades, and smaller, like small to medium sized hunters. Like many of you, I like to use what I have, and I find that this size knife gets the most use around here. Besides, when I need a chopper, I still have plenty to choose from...
