Which "dirrection" do you go when you want to get away from civilization?

I live in the lower peninsula of Michigan. When anybody talks about hunting, hiking, fishing, or camping, we say we are going to "go up north". The farther north you go, the less people there are. What is the saying in your state/area?

I live on Drift Creek up the Alsea River in western Oregon. I simply walk out the front door.

The Everglades are a few miles west of me, Florida Bay is south, the gulf stream is due east.

I depart a city of about 590k population and head east to a city of about 23k population with a family farm.

Go east young man -- go east! :D

If I want to get away from civilization I go "Up" as in the mountains, any direction will do. Thats about the best place to get away from the L.A. Crowd in a hurry...

If I go West I'm swimming in the Pacific (polluted water bad), South takes me into Mexico (Mexico bad), and East dumps me in the dessert (hot bad). North into Northern CA is the place I go for escape.

When I am at home, I am already there. Up here in ND, anyway you go from here is away from civilization.

I usually say we're heading to the mountains, instead of specifying a direction. But the Mountains are to the east, so...

I really could go in any direction being in California...

North, almost always. My usual hiking and snowshoeing turf is along the Collingwood and Blue Mountains sections of the Bruce Trail, which are located to the Northwest of Toronto. If I go North-north-east, I hit Algonquin Park. Actually, I'm pretty lucky to live in this part of Ontario, as I can live in the country's largest city and get to secluded wilderness in a little over an hour, sometimes less.

If I have the time and inclination to really get away from it all, I head West, to British Columbia. The inland mountains region of BC is my idea of paradise.

All the best,

- Mike

North and West, but it's getting to the point that we have to go East of the Cascades to avoid people.

North to Silver City Michigan. Keep driving north till you hit water!
