  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Which "dirrection" do you go when you want to get away from civilization?

I usually say we're heading to the mountains, instead of specifying a direction. But the Mountains are to the east, so...

I really could go in any direction being in California...

+1

We're headed to the mountains Thursday. :D

I am just west of the Sierras, I see them every day (the crest 45 miles east of me is 13,500' higher than my house). I always head east.

Thankfully I live pretty far north and west, and I moved here to get away from society. I either hit downtown or my back yard, where the Ridges to Rivers trail system starts :)

I like heading north to the Sierra mountains but the license plate on my old Bronc says "ADEZRAT" so I often head east to escape the crowds of Los Smogeles.

Living in the Phoenix metro valley I head North for close camping in the pines -the Mogollon Rim is about 1.5 hours away. The Rim is amazing but it's very close to the valley so sometimes it seems the idiots out number the animals.

When we really want to get "away" we head to the White Mountains which are East/North East near the broder with New Mexico. Bears, wolves, trout fishing, eagles, great hikes and much cooler temps...it's got everything.

Just depends. I have a Farm in PA I hunt so I go "north" and land in KY so I go "south west". Alot of people here hunt north of Baltimore or the Eastern Shore. I never really hear "go north" I just hear...."goin to the shore" or "North of Bmore".

East to Letchworth State Park, or west to family land. There is no "big wilderness" around here until you get to the Adirondacks, where I (hopefully) be spending more time from now on.

North or northeast into the area of NH/ME that are away from the population centers of New England. Of course Vermont to the west has a lot of areas to go to as well.... if I had my choice thou it would be wayyyyyyyy north and wayyyyyyyyy west. Ontario. :)

Living in the upper Peninsula of Michigan I am in the woods within a mile in any direction. It is awesome to be able to go to back woods lakes and be the only person there!

In the Northeast, the only big wilderness as was said is the 'Daks or northern VT, NH, ME. So I guess it's north for me too. However there are pockets of wilderness everywhere near where I live. For me it's more of a matter of when. Today I hiked at dawn and didn't see nor hear a soul. I saw a beaver dragging a tree accross a pond, gave me a tail slap on the water for staring. Sadie flushed out several whitetails. Saw some egrets, a great blue heron, and a plethora of songbirds. I started my hike to the sound of crickets and frogs. As the sun crept over the ridge, the birds started their songs. It was only when i was coming out to the trailhead that I started hearing the road and lawn sounds.

Another "up" here - into the mountains. No particular direction, they're all around.

North, north, north until I hit Hwy 11 in Canada.... East to Atikokan, Ontario and Quetico Provincial Park awaits. Canoe camping at it's finest.....true drinking water lakes!! (Yeah...I know....):o
This crowd would love the region.

Huh. Thanks for that bwcaq. I didn't know about that park! It's definitely on my 'must check out' list now.

All the best,

- Mike

There is no getting away from people in Delaware. I've got to head to VA, PA or even parts of MD to feel like I am in a place where I'm alone and don't hear traffic.

The Netherlands is very dense populated. I live in the northern part of the country, one of the more quiet parts. Except in summer, when lots of people go up north. But in summer I also go up north, to Scandinavia.
